  • Related to this, does anyone use smart light switches that have replaced normal light switches?

    • +3

No, but only because I'm not paying an electrician to wire them in legally (home + contents insurance won't pay if the switch is to blame and wasn't installed legally).

      • +6

Unless your house is made of fireworks and matches its unlikely a light switch is going to burn it down.

        • +4

Yes, but in the case that it does I'd rather have insurance pay me out the cost of a new house and valuables rather than be SOL and end up homeless.

    • +1

Yes. I use the battery operated Philips hue switches. They're $30 a pop but work really well.

    • +1

Biggest issue I believe is they need a ground wire which Australian houses generally don't have.

      • What options are available if happy to pay an electrician? Or lucky enough to be one. P.S most new houses and still some older ones will be wired with an earth (ground) and neutral at the switch.

        • There are some sellers on Amazon and eBay who claim their switches are AU standards compatible/conforming.
Amazon ones are usually zigbee/z-wave models.
eBay ones are wifi ones. E.g. https://ebay.us/N7Wmys
Some of them even mention certificate number. I don't know how to verify the cert though

  • Wonder if I could get these working with Homebridge

  • +1

I wish they would give more info about the app you need to install with these kind of generic sockets, looks like it is this one and the permissions include: precise location (GPS and network-based), read the contents of your USB storage, (camera) take pictures and videos, (microphone) record audio, full network access, read your contacts, etc etc!

    • Yeah I was trying to figure that out too but noticed that it said in the first line of the description that it uses the smart life app which is a app I already use with a couple of other sockets I have so that works well

      • This app only works with google home compatible device?
I have a wifi plug that I can’t find a iOS app for

  • Getting cheaper…tempted to get

    • +1

You can get the similar from bunnings I bought few and work really well with alexa.

  • +1

Can you turn this device on and off remotely at will or does it need to be scheduled in the settings?

    • should be able to control it remotely with the app

  • Support Tasmota or Espurna?

  • -7

How is this smart plug better than the likes of TP Link or SA smart plug or Medion Aldi? $28 is quite steep when those plugs cost approx. $19 - $22 a pop.

    • +1

its 2 plugs for $28 so $14 each

    • I don't think $28 for 2 is steep compared to the others.

  • Can I turn on/off light with voice command like "OK google, turn off light" ?

    • From title:

      Google Home Compatible

    • +5

You: OK Google. Turn off the light.

Google: OK. Playing Turn Of The Light by Nelly Furtado on Spotify.

      You: No… OK Google. Stop.

You: OK Google. Turn off the light.

Google: OK. Playing Turn Of The Light by Nelly…

You: OH FOR… OK GOOGLE! TURN OFF THE F@#$ING LIGHT!

      • Hilariously accurate. Best to be concise when conversing with Google.

You: "OK Google, turn off the bedroom lamp".

Google: "OK. Playing Turn Out the Lamplight by George Benson on Spotify."

  • All gone at that price!

  • Lightning deal is now over

    • It just came back again. Have a pair in my cart.

  • yup lightning deal all gone

  • Homekit compatible?
    IFTTT capable?

BrilliantSmart make similar thing available at O-Works, Bunnings etc for $19.95

    • IFTTT capable? = yes* + google home assistant via the tuya oauth2 integration step

Fairly certain this are based on the Tuya IOT kit, so yes should work with IFTTT, at least my variant of these do. The brands keep changing on Amazon so often its hard to keep up.

  • +1

Good value…however….Its one of the ugliest smart plug i have seen in the market
I light the XiaoMi smart plug the best (in terms of the shape and design)

  • +2

What are folks plugging into these? I have Amazon Echos and Smart Bulbs, but I really can't think of anything I want to plug in to these and remotely control… Cheers.
