I bought one a few weeks back, It's by far the best bang of buck soundbar you can buy.
I paid $199 at the time but worth every cent, Even better at this price point.

Almost good enough that you don't need a sub!

    • +3

But can you actually attach a sub to it down the track?!

    • Maybe I got a dud. The sound on mine is miserable and the bass is stupidly high in the mix. I switched back to using the TV speakers - suddenly I could understand dialogue again.

  • going strong, no complaints.

But how does it actually sound?

    • +3

Got to be honest, I have trouble hearing dialogue on it, in that I think I can hear it better on the Hisense N7 speakers.

But maybe it's just that I'm getting old.

      • I assume you're using the "Clear Voice" function? It helps a bit.

        • Yeah I am, but admittedly that was the full extent of my tweaking.

      • Thanks for your honesty. I also have a Hisense N7 (or similar - I believe the speakers will be the same) and find the dialogue a bit muffled in my Philips soundbar - enough that the Hisense speakers sound clearer.

Have been looking at getting a soundbar with wireless rears which can run in stereo so makes it easier to place for parents to hear better rather than turning up the volume to 99.

I was keen on Sonos but even that runs as surround for the rear speakers when input is from TV - so back to the drawing board.

      • Works great with our Sony (and have heard they have some issues with Hisense) but I agree, dialogue was actually clearer through the TV speakers even with ClearVoice enabled

Everything else is better + more mid and bass but feels like it's missing the treble notes

  • The 2700 is also on sale and is a major step up but at a few times the price.

    Review - https://www.techhive.com/article/3291317/yamaha-yas-108-revi…

As you can add ANY subwoofer to it down the track, It's a major positive!

    • The review says it does not support Dolby Vision nor HDR10+. What does this mean? Is this only a problem if you're looking to plug your STB directly into the soundbar for ARC? What would be the benefit of that..? I have LGB8 and want to make sure still getting the most out of 4k/DV content.

      • You can use it as a passthrough, so likely doesn't support it in that feature.

  • Out of stock, damn good price

    • +1

      Item still in stock, but

Excludes: Northern Territory, Perth Metro, QLD Far North, SA Regional, VIC Regional, WA Regional, WA Remote, PO Box

  • What’s the best option for getting this sound bar in WA?

    • Try to pricematch/beat with officeworks or JB

      • They sell the YAS108B not the ATS1080, and im sure they will say they are different

  • Stupid question, but would it be possible to add two rear speakers to this (with a sub as well) to make 5.1?

    • Sub yes, rear speakers no.

      • Thank you!

  • +1

I thought it is a rubber door stopper looking at the picture.

    • hah! Never thought about that before… Now I cannot unsee!

    • I thiought it was some futuristic hypersonic train

  • +3

    Doesn't post to Perth :(

I bought this after I read so many recommendations but unfortunately I don't share the same feedback.

Yes it has good deep bass (for a sub-less bar) but it somehow muffles the spoken dialogue of EVERY movie.

All spoken dialogue sounds like people almost talking wayyy further than the microphone, at times almost like speaking through a tshirt

There is a 'Clear Voice' button the remote as I think Yamaha realised this to boost the voice but it to me it was useless

    • I wonder if there is an issue with your unit, I picked one up today and just tested it out and it seems OK. I may not have the best ear though, but it sounds good to me.

It might be worth contacting Yamaha with your concerns if the unit is still under warranty.

edit: I just read someone else had a similar issue with dialogue in the thread, so maybe not just your unit..

      • I think the issue is that the unit itself has been pre-configured with very high bass, this is what's causing the muffled voice.
The voice should be clear and crisp but it's not on this unit.

    • Thanks for that review as I am particularly looking for something that will 'promote' voices over background noise as I am struggling more and more with my television(old age - me and the tv) and presumed most sound bars would allow me to fix this with some setting like the 'clear voice' function in this one.

Can anyone recommend one they have found particularly good for this ??? Don't mind spending a bit more for quality - within reason…

      • Most Dolby PLI systems can key you adjust the volume of the centre speaker that varies voice.

    • That almost sounds like you're listening to a 5.1 stream but only receiving the Front Left and Right channels (ie. no centre channel where the dialogue mostly originates). This can occur on misconfigured surround sound systems - but I'm not sure how this could happen on a soundbar as any 5.1 streams would usually be automatically downmixed to stereo before outputting to the soundbar. shrug

    • 100% my experience too. Total waste of a purchase - had to revert back to the TV speakers.

    • Based on all these comments, no thanks. Voice is always the biggest issue re clarity on tv/movies. I don't need obnoxious loud bass. Will stick with the tv speakers.

    • I was just about to pull the trigger too, but I already struggle with hearing dialogue to I'll give it a miss I think :(

  • Is this better than my yamaha 107b ?
    Cant see any difference

    • It's the same unit.

      • so is this ATS-1080 the same as YTS-108?

        • +3

108 is the same as 1080
107 is the previous model of the 108/1080

207 is the 107 with an external sub (and no built in subs)

          • @blonky: Thanks for this. I've had the same question for a while but never bothered to google it

          • @blonky: Yes my error the 1080 is the same as the 108, I just assumed without reading carefully that you wrote 108. Thanks for clearing it up for Him/Her Blonky.

  • Thanks OP! Just ordered:)

  • What sound setting should I set my Xbox One (HDMI) and PS4 (optical) to?

And what mode on the soundbar to make the most of it?

  • Anymore reviews on this unit before I pull the trigger? I know some ppl saying it muffles the spoken dialogue of all movies. Is this that bad? Anyway to fix this issue or should I look at another soundbar?

    • I received mine to replace my existing Kogan sound bar: https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-21ch-80w-soundbar-built-s…

And it is way more bassy, definitely harder to hear deeper voices with this Yamaha one. Kogan one is actually pretty good comparatively.

Another issue I have with this one is the HDMI-ARC connection doesn't work for my Samsung MU7000 whereas the Kogan one does.

  • I have the yamaha 108 model got from amazon deal few weeks back,in the middle of unpacking aa moved into new house so not hot much time to waste time on right now.i can't seem to get any sound from tv? Im right in saying if tv has hdmi arc then you don't need to use opital cable as thats how i see it on the instructions?
Having the option of putting tv on wall was a pain to put up there.
Had i plugged in opital cable as well as hdmi when setting up would this have worked. It is a target platinum tv from few years ago so not the best tv but we using it for now till we upgrade and put it back in bedroom.
I can get sound from blu ray player but not from dtv i should be able to here sound with that right? I also have apple tv and a kodi box but no Internet yet to try out but will i get sound on yamaha?
I got the yamaha to gives us a better sound in living area until i upgrade to better tv later in year and all i can use it for is with blu ray as said cant test apple tv or kodi until Internet and obviously nothing comes through when watching tv only when i select analog on yamaha.

  • Can anyone recommend a decent subwoofer to connect to this? I purchased this soundbar but find the bass quite lacking. thanks
