  • Given the recent devaluation, wondering if anyone knows how Amex points stand up vs HSBC rewards points?

  • As a non cardholder, can those of you trying to take advantage of this please try to convince me of the best deal for me (considering benefits, fee, and sign up bonus) and send me to the correct ozbargain referral link. Thanks in advance

    • I reckon velocity platinum at the moment is the best detail.
Sign up bonus of 100k velocity points
      Low annual fee $375
Free return flight every year, can be sold for approx $350
      All sort of insurance
      lounge pass x 4

Deal this post mentioned is really for referrer, not great for referee.

    • I would say the most popular card would be the Explorer or the Platinum edge.

I got the Explorer when they had a promotion and before they devalued the exchange rates to frequent flyer programs. With the 100k bonus, I transferred close to 80k Krisflyer miles. You need about 85k miles + fees (about $100) to fly first class from Sydney to Singapore. It's a nice experience.

You also get travel credit to use on hotels and such. This usually offsets the fees.

Check out the reviews online as they are quite mixed now after the devaluation.

      • You lose out on 20k points by not signing up to the Platinum card and linking the two rewards together.

You're gonna have to do the legwork yourself. The thing with Amex cards is that whether they're good value or not is really gonna depend on your personal circumstances. For example, if you do a lot of domestic and US travel then the Virgin Australian and Delta lounge access provided by the Platinum Charge card might be worthwhile for you. Of course it has a $1450 annual fee so you're going to need to carefully assess if all the various benefits (and there's a lot to examine) will pay off for you and you'll need to be earning more than $100k p.a. to qualify.

The Edge ($195 p.a.) and Explorer ($395 p.a.) cards both come with Amex Travel vouchers that are equal to the annual fee, but of course they're only useful if you're someone who flies a route that's more than that at least once a year and are able to book it through Amex travel. You can spend them on hotels as well but Amex Travel tends to be more expensive with hotels than a lot of other agencies. Both cards require a certain income threshold as well of course.

The Essential and Low Rate cards have no annual fees but are very light on benefits as well. All of these cards also earn points at different rates.

Personally I've gotten a lot of value out of my Amex cards, but which one will be good value for you is going to require a bit of browsing round the site and comparing the offers and benefits to things that are actually useful for you. Also, if you aren't the kind of person who pays off the balance in full each and every month then you'll almost certainly be better off in the long run with the lowest interest rate card you can find, rather than the shiny rewards/benefits cards.

  • Weird, I got 200k + 120k for me, and its eligible for anyone who applies for any Amex credit card

    • Hi,

      what card do you have.

      • +1

        I got explorer and edge

        • 200k/120k for explorer seems pretty good

          • @guichenmin: Doesn't the platinum edge have a lower annual fee, plus the points are worth more?

            • @clone: explorer and edge points value are very similar, most importantly explorer comes with much bigger sign up bonus, so always choose explorer against edge for 1st card.

  • -5

Amex is dead. Stick to visa, MasterCard and bitcoin

  • I got 200 + 70 - Amex Explorer

    • same

    • Did you get devaluation extension till 1st of July?

  • A friend was signing up today so it worked out well!

  • When did everyone receive these emails? Looks like I missed out!

    • 8 am this morning.

    • Mine hit my inbox at 08:01 today. Given the number of customers Amex has though it might take a while for the emails for everyone to process. Also, it's probably targeted to some degree.

    • No email for me either

  • Got 100k +20 for other party on the platinum edge, isn't this really 50k and 10k compared to the old rates before they devalued the points?
Understand the rules on the referral spam but is there anyway that mods can allow people to come to agreements with each other on a forum thread or something? This deal requires a bit of 'you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours' arrangement.

    • Understand the rules on the referral spam but is there anyway that mods can allow people to come to agreements with each other on a forum thread or something?

Use the referral system above. That's what it's for. Anything else no.

      • +1

Fair enough, it doesn't really allow any correspondence with the other party but I understand why you have these rules in place

      • +4

By using those random links, you're guessing/hoping the referral link it spits out haven't been used by anyone else already and won't know until couple of months later after fulfilling the requirements.

      • The current referral system is not set up to be used with these special referrals I dont think. You need the special code after the '?' in the link to get the extra bonus points for this deal.

  • +1

    Ugh. On my Explorer

    40,000 Bonus Points for you,
60,000 Bonus Points for a friend*

    • Same here :(

  • Anyway of highlighting the increase to 100k for referrals??

I got 250k bonus and 100k for other party on AMEX Platinum card.

  • Amex go explorer card- 1000 points= $5.00

  • Did not get an email

    • same. have the Explorer and didnt receive anything. Spend is about $3500 a month and had it for 18 months. Not sure if that comes into play or not

  • This would explain why i got 40K Qantas points for a referral on my Qantas Discovery last week

    • that is the normal referral incentive

  • At that point bonus, you might as well offer to cover some of the card fee for your mate

    • Agreed. For those that receive the 200,000 Qantas polnts offer I would pay a friend the more than half the yearly fee and they would get a the 75000 QF points and a return flight out of it.

  • Got the 250K offer but after the point devaluation it will be hard to find someone. This was the email:

    250,000 Bonus Points for you,
100,000 Bonus Points for a friend*
We have a one-time only referral offer, just for you.

Right now, you have the opportunity to select one friend to refer an
American Express® Platinum Card to, and as long as they apply by
5 June 2019 and are approved for a new Card, you could both receive a phenomenal amount of Membership Rewards points*.

  • Wow, wish I got this email. That's some insane amount of points!

  • +5

Just trying to piece together the best options here. Maybe add and expand on this in the OP?

Card Referrer Referee Annual Fee Unique to this deal
    Platinum Edge 100,000 40,000 $195 Yes
    Platinum 250,000 100,000 $1,450 Yes
    Explorer 120,000 70,000 $395 Yes
Velocity Platinum 40,000 Velocity Pts (~80k Amex) 100,000 Velocity Pts(~200k Amex) $375 No - Normal Rate
    • Can you add Qantas Ultimate to that list? I got offered 120K/75K QFF points

      • Can confirm, got the same points offer on my Ultimate as well.

  • +2

Well done OP. I was about to delete my email for referral Platinum Charge card 250,000 Bonus Points for me, 100,000 Bonus Points for a friend.
Also has anyone had their points doubled due to the recent devaluation? They told me that the doubling would happen this month.

    • Not yet, frustrating as I've had to move a significant portion of existing points out.

    • I thought the doubling is scheduled for June?

    • Doubling by 15th June

  • Also got the 250k for me and 100k for friend.
    Platinum Charge Card.

  • 100k bonus for sign up - 150k for me on the Amex Platinum. Dont know anyone who would want one though!

  • Hmmm..I got 4 x cards, but did not get any email…
Not sure if amex is still in the process of sending out the invitation emails….

    • yeah no one wants to tell me how to view the offers lol.

      No emails here either.

The link on ozbargain just gives $200 travel voucher

      • +2

The only way is to have received and email with the unique referral link. What card you after?

  • platinum edge

    150,000 for refferel
    20,000 for referee

    Not great for referee

  • But points have less value now

  • +1

    Qantas American Express Ultimate

    200,000 Qantas Points for you,
75,000 Qantas Points for a friend*

I don't have any friend to refer though :(

    • That is insane

    • This is a good offer

  • My account says you can receive 40,000 Membership Rewards points for each friend approved using your referral link. While you cannot refer your Card, your friend can choose from any of the available American Express Cards.

I cannot complain. Years ago AMEX stopped charging me any annual fee, which is quite handy since the card still provides $400 a year to spend on flights or hotel rooms. Used to be better, with flights to Bali.

    • How did you manage to convince Amex not charging you any annual fee?

      • I had a Amex charge card for while, it provided a waiver on an earlier AMEX credit card fee. Later, I cancelled the charge card but not the credit card, and it has remained fee free for many years. Old terms and conditions or computer glitch.

  • Wow. Interesting with so many different offers.
I got the 200k for me, 70k for other person on the Explorer.

  • 120k for you (me)
    75k for friend

    Qantas Ultimate

  • Logged into account and just standard points for referral. No email. Those who got the email, can you see he same offer when you login online or via the mobile app?

  • I got 200,000 points for me, 75,000 points for my friend with the Qantas American Express Ultimate Card. Now who wants to be my friend? ;)

  • I got 200,000 & 70,000 on Explorer

  • I have a Qantas American Express Discovery Card and didn't get any email…

  • Missed out on the recent 100k qantas ultimate after having to wait 18 months to be able to do Amex again. 75k is too low to jump back in though. Disappointing that it’s 200k for the referrer and only 75k for the signee. Otherwise I’d happily be someone’s referrery.

  • 200,000 + 70,000 for friend on Explorer for me. Not too bad a sign up bonus, better than the 50k current sign up bonus

    • Does this show up when you login or is it just from the email?

      • Just email which contains a link to share

  • Qantas American Express Ultimate
    120,000 QFF points for me
    75,000 QFF points for friend/family
    Received email yesterday

  • For all those wondering… my theory is some customers got an extension on devaluation of points till 1st of July… those who got the devaluation extension the referral bonus is smaller… while those didn't get the devaluation extension got higher referral bonus…

As 120k points (pre devaluation) pretty much = 200k (post devaluation)

    • I didn't get any devaluation extension and haven't received an email

  • its been a while since ive applied for an amex,

is the referee bonus on top of what the person you have referred gets as part of their sign up bonus??

I remember people were waiting for the explorer card to be 100,000 bonus points promo to sign up

    • No. It's only this. Or the standard one. You can't double dip

      • given that the points are worht half now, 70k poitns for the referree is 35k miles for $395 annual fee

        that aint very good!

        • It's trying to look after existing customers it seems

  • +1

    Got my 250,000 within 24 hours :)

    • who did you get to use your referral link?

      • A friend

    • That's awfully quick.
I thought referee has to spend 3 months

      • +1

I believe the referrer merely needs to share it with a friend/family member who then need to apply and be subsequently approved.
The 3 month minimum spends applies to the friend/family member to receive their points.

    • Crazy, normal referral takes much longer than this. How come I haven't got the referral offer :(

  • +1

Hubby got 120,000 + 70,000 for friend on Explorer. No friend to refer though lol.

  • none for me. sigh.

    • I have been told by an Amex representative that this offer will be coming out in phases (not sure how true this is, has anyone else called up and asked?)

      • Let's hope so, would love to try and refer some people!

  • anyone got any idea, how long from the referee application approval to points hitting your account?

    • 24 hours for me

      • Nice, I'm on about 24 hours too. But nothing yet

I gave my link to a few people hopefully the one who actually got approved triggers the points

      • yayyyy Points credited!

  • Is it only Amex issued cards with the crazy bonuses? Damn.
