  • I think that lights that shine up into your face are stupid.

They should be lighting up the surface where you are walking, not shining in your eyes preventing you from seeing where you are walking.

I don't understand why people would put these in at all. Doesn't it make walking at night less safe?

Depends on how you walk i guess. The lights do shine up, but usually people will walk and "potentially" look down at around 45degrees, so they won't be shining in your eyes. But if you are a person who looks straight down when they are walking, then you are in strife.

I'm currently in the process of putting these in to illuminate a path. But will go on either side of the path. Not using this type, but a MR16 Type housing which quite a few commercial applications use. Will be using 5W LED at 1M distances from each other. Can use the globes out of the box since its around 400lm, way too bright.

Then using a dimmer to adjust the brightness to an acceptable level.

      • I thought the point of path or step lights is to light up the path / steps, not shine up into the space above.

      Correct.
We bought a house that had garden steps from the garage to the house, and the previous owners had installed lights similar to these on the side of each step.
Walking up the steps is not so bad, as you do look forward, but they don't really help in lighting the way.
Walking down the steps is just dangerous, as you tend to look down more to see where the next step is, and these lights shine into your eyes (from the side) and make it worse than if walking with just ambient light from other nearby lights.
I would never use upward facing lights again.
