Looking to Purchase UPS for Home Office Setup

Looking to purchase UPS for home office setup I have, with price target of upto $500.

Main purpose I want to achieve (during power outage) here will be:

  • To connect my modem
  • Arlo Pro2 camera base station

I have NO knowledge about UPS so it's difficult what's right, technical config, and what to look for and not, etc.

I am looking for couple of options based on the community here, before I google myself (which force me to buy specific product / brand based on my search through side advertisement I get) on this.

I appreciate your guidance / feedback here.

    1. Count how many power points you're using now.

    2. Calculate your typical wattage with all appliances on. Use a socket meter if necessary

    3. Multiply your typical wattage by amount of time you want to run it for.

    4. Buy a UPS with enough power and number of sockets.

Consider getting two UPS. One for modem, router and security. Second for web hosting and office server.

    • good pointers. thanks for your comments and for sure will consider them.
I don't use for hosting or any server at home. Just a simple working from home setup I have…

Don't forget that a UPS is just a fancy box a circuit attached to an SLA battery to function.

If your battery is flat, if doesn't do anything. Replace the battery every 2-3 years if you want it to be reliable.

For how long? Most UPS's will only give you runtime in the 10-40 min range at best. The more load the shorter the runtime.

So if you think you'll be using this stuff for hours on end, then yeah nah.

    • I would say at least I can run power for 60min. - 90 min. max.?
to ensure I finish off my back to back calls (if they happens to be on those unfortunate time)

      • yeah then thats not really going to be happening.

I thought about getting one when I started telecommuting 2 days a week 7 years ago.

I held off due to cost. glad I didn't buy it because the power has failed once in the last 7 years (for less than 2 hours) .

    • very valid point you made here.
I was thinking along the lines, but recently I had an outage / switch trip over middle of the night (I work in global team) and had couple of very important calls where I was cut-off.

I will see what others recommend but as I think more (which comments do validate the same) may be it may not be worth to spend too much either. Thanks for your thought as well.

      • Depends what your PC setup is but for my work, I have a laptop with a built in 4G modem. I know it's not the solution for everyone but it gives me peace of mind that I'll be fine. The other option is to install WebEx/Google Meet/whatever platform you use on your phone/tablet (I have these on both my iPhone and iPad).

  • A laptop and a tablet or phone will typically offer you more uptime than a UPS for a home office.
