Need a New Clothes Iron, Which Brand / Model Would You Recommend?

Moving into a new place, looking for recommendations for a new iron - especially ones which have worked really well for you folks.
Or if you have any horror stories, i.e. DO NOT BUY warnings, feel free to name and shame.

Budget
Not really fussed over budget, whether it's $30 or $300 - I want to know your experience with specific models or brands and why you love / hate them.

Usage
Our usage is nominal, twice a week at most. I primarily will be using it to iron business shirts + pants while the missus will be using it for straightening coloured garments and dresses.

Philips Azur range are pretty good irons but do NOT get the self-adjusting temperature ones.

    • why not self adjusting?

      • They don’t work very well for things like formal work shirts. Maintain a lower heat and steam level than desired.

This comment was from over 4.5 years ago. The newer continuous steam variants are much much better.

I use a high end Philips Steam Generator. It cuts my ironing time in half but you have to batch up the ironing. I iron a months worth of shirts at a time which takes me around 2 to 2.5 mins a shirt.

If you're more a "iron in the morning before wearing it" sorta guy, go with something like Hybroid's recommendation.

    • 2 - 2.5 min? That's impressive. I'm curious, how does a steam generator iron cut down time by that much?

      • Two main reasons:

The steam helps with single pass ironing. You won't need to iron over an area that you have ironed before, even with thick material like denim.

The steam passes through two layers of material so areas like the arms of a shirt only need be ironed on one side.

  • We have a Tefal and are quite happy with it, the steam button is in a good place ergonomically. If you are looking at Phillips it might be worth looking at the Breville outlet place in Smith St, Fitzroy, they also do Philips.

Get one with an inactivity alarm.

We have a Russell Hobbs 20551AU.

For extra safety, I also have the iron plugged into a mechanical timer (HPM) in the wall socket. You have to turn timer before you can use iron.

My sister caused a, fortunately small, fire because she left the iron on face down so I am understandably a bit paranoid about iron fire safety.

    • I always buy one that cuts off if it has been left on. Even without the risk of fire I'm paranoid about my cats getting near it.
