Flights to the USA

Anyone know of cheap flights to the USA?

Best I can find are direct with Virgin for around $1667

Have found another way to save but given that maybe someone has a better way.

By Flying to NZ one way I can pickup a Virgin flight Auckland to LAX via SYD Cost $A199/219 via Jetstar/Virgin then $NZ1378 to LAX and return.

Total is $A1060 plus $A219 plus 1 night in Auckland $A100 = $1379 saving almost $300 but lose 1 day with travel.

On return from LAX can have one stop over - which would elect to do in SYD. Then just dont get on the leg from SYD to Auckland.

Alternatively could fly to NZ a month or so earlier enjoy a weekend there, pick up some duty free, NZ wine etc, cheap mars bars, Pick up LAX flight, take my stop over in SYD on way out, then reboard a month later to finish off trip.

This will mean paying an extra $125 for second stop off in Sydney on the way back. Unless someone has knowledge of how to clear customs in Australia before flying on to NZ. Now I did see that flights going to wellington have to fly out of Brisbane. So if I did a multicity flight say AKL SYD LA LA SYD/BNE/WNG I would be forced to do customs in Sydney as the flight to BNE was a domestic flight.

Alternatively if I was sick after the LAX/SYD flight and had to miss the AKL leg, what procedures are there (hehe). Or anyone know how to effectively clear customs in Sydney with bags while transiting thru to AKL

I can't find anything cheaper than that. It looks like flights to the US have gone up significantly in the last 12-18 months.

  • Was just reading this on the FF forum. May be useful, http://www.australianfrequentflyer.com.au/community/your-que…

    • Thanks have posted idea over there, see what responses I get

    • much so - thanks

  • hey what are the dates are you looking at to go from sydney to lax? would you consider Vaustralia? if so, can you please contact me on [email protected] as I might be able to get you a better price

  • Hi Pete,
Thanks for this interesting post. It is amazing how substantially cheaper it is with this NZ special at the moment. We are looking at flights too, so I would really appreciate any info you find on this one.
    Cheers, Gary.

  • Get in quick. $539 RT to Honolulu. http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/46471

  • I'm looking for cheap flights as well, for April next year, pref. BNE -> LAX.

Last time I went two years ago you could take your pick from $1000-ish return tickets but I can't seem to do much better than about $1600 this time around. I guess it's just a question of watching OzBargain and the airline sales and having the cash to jump on a sale fare at a moment's notice…

    • I'd recommend www.skyscanner.net

I used it earlier this month and got 1200 MEL-LAX return with Qantas. Not the cheapest flights, but certainly a bargain price for Qantas.

  • Is it worth trying to get a US proxy IP address and booking it on the US site of airlines like Qantas etc, I wonder

    • At the time I looked into it, the return flights from the US site of Qantas was VERY cheap (but of course not much use to us as they has to originate in the US), but the one way fares were very expensive & the US site would only let you choose a US city as your starting point.

      • Thanks for the info - I was wondering about that, and yeah, I figured you could only fly from a US starting point and thought about booking two one way tickets

  • Still watching flight prices - Qantas have LAX return for about $1400 now
