Asking about Road Rule, Turning Left in Multi Lane

https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/159455/69512/capture_045.png

I am using this lane all the time and many people turning left like yellow arrow.
But is it actually allow to turn like this?

I cannot find any image from google but one thing about turning right.

https://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/images/roads/safety-rules/roadrules/turning-either-lane.jpg

If you follow this rule to turn left, the yellow arrow is not permitted, i think.

Thank you.

No. You are correct, you must stay in your lane because the lane to your right can also turn left.

Ok good, then I have to take super extra care using that lane.
Almost every people using that lane turning like the yellow arrow.

      • Hi Pian. I was about to post this exact same topic, because I have the same experience at the very same intersection. I have even had cars brake check me, get out of their car to yell abuse at me, because I have dared to honk them when they have cut across in front of me.

Almost every single time I turn left at the intersection from the middle lane, I have to either stop or move out of my lane to avoid getting hit by someone turning left from the left lane and cutting across the middle lane.

Given the area I could make some comment about the demographic, but I have to say that it is equally westerners who cut across to either the middle lane or outside lane.

If I had an old car I would be very tempted to let someone run into me there, though you can't really rely on the cops making the correct judgement about road rules. They might deem it a "both at fault" for not paying enough attention to surrounding vehicles etc.

  • What if you're on a 2-lane road turning onto a 4-lane highway?

Count from the left. The number of the lane you turn from should be the same as the one you turn into.

      • And I take it leaves lanes 3 and 4 empty? Interesting.

        • Keep left unless overtaking.

        • Yes, until you indicate and change into them. I learnt this the hard way in a driving test when I turned left and crossed to the other lane to turn right shortly afterward without indicating a lane change, doing a head check etc.

The reason (some @sshats) coming from far left lane (Carlingford Rd) turning into mid lane (Pennant Hills Rd) because if they turn to left lane, it's only goes left to either Keeler St or Marsden Rd. I'm guessing they just lazy to merge into mid lane (towards Parra). And it's only less than 50-70m from traffic light.

This is the only exception I've come across, where the inner lane has a choice of which lane to enter, and the outer lane must stick to the far right. But it's indicated by the markings (turning west from Boronia Rd).

It's illegal and dangerous to change lanes while turning, but people do it all the time through ignorance.
People will even use the added lanes to overtake while turning - even worse.

Stay in the lane you're in, counting from the left as @Euphamistic states above

If you do not change lanes when turning in some situations when doing your truck license in SA you will lose points. In SA the L/h lane in this situation has to stay to the left around the corner if there was a car in the r/h lane they can use either of the other 2 (unless marked otherwise)

Different rules for trucks when turning, it’s probably why they have those funny signs on the back about not overtaking when turning.

If VTEC kicks in you will have no choice what lane to use

    • "If"? Don't you mean "When"?

  • -4

You do the right thing. First lane on left and middle lane are yours when you turn. It's designed this way so that small trucks can fully turn properly.

I'm with you Lexan. Every instance I know of this type of turn (where 2 lanes are turning onto a 3 lane road), the car on the right goes into the far right lane, and the car on the left can go into either of the other 2 lanes.

In practice, when turning left, the leftmost car almost always goes into the 2nd lane as this is the least "aggressive" turn (ie not sharp)

Regardless if this is what does happen, doesn’t mean it is correct. It’s the other way around. Turn left to the left most lane.

If you are in the leftmost lane you must turn into the leftmost lane unless line markings dictate where you go (as PurpleHippo has shown an example).

If you have dash cam, just let them hit you, they'll learn the hard way.
