Does it have to be gas?
An efficient reverse cycle Aircon is cheaper to run these days.

    • I have a air con at home but not in a central location and find bedrooms to be very cold… the gas bayonet is in a central location

    • Is it really? Curious to know, thanks

      • That’s what iv’e found anyway. I suppose depends on the layout of your house.

  • I had the biggest non-flued 25Mj Rinnai convector at my old place (badly designed open plan chimney) and the place before that.

25 years and still going strong. Never serviced. I just cleaned the filters and kept the dust out of it.

    • I had one of these, they're great

      • Interested in one of these but only have access to Lpg. Can you tell me a bit more about your experiences? Any gas smells or condensation issues? What sort of environment are you using it in and what is the approximate effective m2 floorspace which you are heating? I'd like to heat several connected areas up to approximately 80m2. My place is quite drafty and poorly insulated with lots of uncovered aluminium windows and very cold wooden floors. Are they economic to run?

      • House 1 where we bought it for in 1996 (?) was a 1914 3 bedroom, single story, double brick terrace of 80sqm with the rear kitchen opened up (a common renovation now but was cutting edge at the time). Aluminium windows with timber venetians that were only closed at night; no ceiling insulation; tin roof; timber floors and a large ventilated area under the house to combat the rising damp.

It heated the lounge/kitchen/dining really well if we blocked off the bedrooms/hallway. About an hour before bedtime we'd open the doors to that area to warm them up a bit.
Gas was cheap then so I didn't pay much attention to cost.

House 2 was double brick, split level, 3 bedrooms, open plan kitchen, dining and lounge; centrally located stairs to bedroom areas with the stairs acing like a chimney; timber floor; thick blinds on windows; ceiling insulation; tile roof.
It heated the north facing bottom floor (60sqm) adequately but you still needed warm clothes and socks. It made the bedroom above quite warm (often the stairwell was warmest spot in the house).

A few years back it was ~$2/day to run it for 12 hours. Gas prices have gone nuts and I'd say it's now $6/12 hours with the thermostat set on halfway (which it rarely activates).

edit: No smell and never any condensation issues - I'd assume due to the open plan design of the houses.

My new place is 3bedrooms & 3 stories with a central stairwell (I keep making the same mistake). and there is a gas spigot on the ground floor. With the cost of gas I ignored the gas spigot and put in a Daiken 3.5kw inverter for $1636. Much cheaper to run than a gas heater these days.

  • Everdure are the best!
Gas smell or naked flame come with any moveable gas heater Im afraid

Hardly a naked flame though unless you got one of those built-in fireplace type gas heaters which are made to look like a burning flame

    • thanks for the feedback, looking at rinnai heater.
