Install a Rear (Reverse Gear) Camera for Toyota Camry 2009 Model

Hi Guys,
I have a Toyota Camry Altise 2009 model. I would want to add a feature of a rear parking camera.

I have never been into dealing with any kind of modifications with any car. Do you know what is the best and cheapest option do I have to install a back camera, please?

thanks,
Amit

  • Are you asking about a rear parking camera or a rear dashcam?

    • thanks, I have corrected my question - it is rear parking camera

  • Gumtree ~$200 if you're not keen doing it yourself.

    • That is just a labour cost ?

The cameras cost around $20 for a pretty shitty cheap one, so someone charging around $180 in labour is not unfathomable.

  • the most expensive option would be going to your local dealer.
the cheapest one is to do it yourself. or maybe use airtasker?

    Toyota Camry axis

    Axis? You probably meant Altise.

You haven't indicated budget, although you've said "best and cheapest"… don't fall for cheap, nasty Chinese shit. Especially those horrible number plate camera jobs. Or slap-on mirror screens.

Find a reputable mobile car stereo fitting service in your area. Plenty in Sydney.

For camera, I recommend a good name brand camera (Kenwood, etc.) and have it fitted factory style under the number plate appliqué on the LH side, similar to this.

What head unit do you currently have? Similar to this? My recommendation is replace this head unit with a colour touch screen unit to display your camera image. Either a good name brand unit or a second-hand Toyota factory unit off eBay or Gumtree (eg. here. Fascias are available to suit your Camry.

Keep in mind, 40 series Camrys are susceptible to melting dashes, if you have a melting dash, it could be an issue when the factory unit is removed (i.e. dash material sticking to original fascia).

    • Yes it is Altise.
You are right that I have a head unit that is similar to what you have referred. I also want to replace the same with colour touch screen.
I am in Sydney Campbelltown area and it will be good to know what is the best option that I have.
I don't want to spend 1000+ on $5000 worth car atm.

      • How much do you think a colour touch screen plus camera is gonna cost? You'd be talking over $500 installed

        • I have no idea mate the lowest I can go is better for me. 300-400 should be a decent?

    • Keep in mind, 40 series Camrys are susceptible to melting dashes

@PinzVidz Sorry to go offtopic here but just read your comment, did a quick search and realised my melting dash probably isnt the result of me applying too much Armor All or too much sun then….

It's a 2008 Camry, has anyone here received a new dash from Toyota?

10 years from first registered date was originally the cutoff to have it replaced free of charge. However, I'm now seeing some have got it done for free past the cutoff. Talk to your local Toyota service dept, put in a request to get it done.

        • thank you

arrrgh, probably missed by one year then! I have to take it back to them for the automatic window grease recall (which I've been sitting on for over a year…) so I'll try mentioning it then.

  • I think jb hifi still sell and install everything in house. This is where I'd go.

Camry drivers just back out without looking, that's why it didn't come with a camera as standard

And that is how a Camry dent is born.

Not true.. I have both the camera and the dent.

Happened to a friend last week, bang straight into her brand new Mercedes which she was in the middle of the road..

    it's pretty simple.

you splice the camera power supply into one of the rear reverse lights. so when you put the car into reverse then the camera is powered on .

run the video cable up through the car to the little screen which sits on the dash and is powered by the cigerette lighter .

have a look at this aliexpress listing for camera+ monitor for ~AU$27 delivered

down the page it shows you how the wiring is set up.

this is the set up I'd use if I needed to install a camera

    • Thank you so much mate. I still want screen to be a part of my head console.

  • Can get an aftermarket stero head unit installed that has a backup camera. Thats what i did in my old car

    • Thank you. Can you please suggest me the model, cost and whom should I request to install?

      • -1

In other words, do your homework for you?

        • Well why do you think I am asking a question in the forum? Not to know that I need stereo head unit installed?
In other words, if you have it installed, you will know all these details and you just share the experience.

It is an assignment for me, and taking help to achieve it. That is why I am here asking…!

          • @ivegan: But we've already ascertained that this is above your budget. Even if you go for a cheap shitty Chinese head unit, it'll still be a silly idea on a $5,000 car.

            You need:
            Head unit
            Fascia surround
            Reverse camera
            Steering wheel controls adapter
            Installation

Everyone can do all the homework for you, but unless you stretch the budget it'll be a pointless exercise for anyone to do, and will just end up with you saying "thanks but it's too expensive".

            • @spackbace: Thank you for your reply.

So if I go by the bargain and get these items. How about the installation? Is it possible to fix it by myself?
when I watch youtube, it seems like it is possible but not sure if it is better I buy a product from the same person who can fix it too for me.

                @ivegan:

when I watch youtube, it seems like it is possible

That's because Youtube is one big selection bias. Everything looks easy after watching it on Youtube because nobody uploads a Youtube video where they suddenly discover that they can't do the thing. All Youtube has is videos of people completing tasks successfully. Nobody gets partway through a video and says, "OK at this point I have no idea what I'm doing. Bye!".
