Yaris Ascent 2019 vs Honda Jazz VTi 2019

Hi all, I have recently moved back to the suburbs from the city. And looking for a new car to buy, just something really affordable and has a lot of safety features as I haven't driven for 4 years since living in the city I didn't really needed a car.

I've done a bit of research, but really clueless when it comes to cars, was wondering if I can find some concrete answers on which one I should buy. Thanks guys!

Yaris currently on offer from $17,490 https://www.toyota.com.au/current-offers/offer-details?offer…
And the Jazz from $17,990 https://www.honda.com.au/offers.html?exp=1#!//jazz

I would go with the Honda Jazz, it feels like you get more for your money, but don't take my word for it. Test drive both and see what you think, the Yaris Ascent is a very basic and unrefined car, whereas even a base Jazz is imo more polished.

Consider the Mazda 2 which is arguably the leader in this segment.

I faced the same decision a few months ago - needed a cheap and reliable runabout, and considered a car which might be a good learner for the kids after a few years of my using it. Both these cars were the last ones on the short-list. I ended up getting the Jazz for $17K - I felt it had more room (especially up front) than the Yaris which was my biggest priority, and was the main reason I dismissed the Mazda 2 mentioned above which IMO was tiny inside. I also thought the Jazz had the nicest styling of all the cars in the class - but that's just me.

I was considering some Korean cars in the same class / price-range that had the advantage of a 6th gear (personally manual is the only option for a tiny runabout like these) but lacked other features like a reversing camera. TBH I really miss the 6th speed now whenever doing 80+km/h - Honda and Toyota need to lift their game here; if I could turn back time I'd go for a Korean 6 speed instead. Like all small runabouts they all feel loose and tinny.

Other things about the Jazz I don't like: stereo has no rotary volume control knob and crappy phone integration, steering wheel volume controls on the left and cruise on the right (IMO better the other way around), seats are a bit firm compared to Yaris and others (I noticed this immediately at the showrooms), centre console has no covered compartment (Yaris has no centre console at all!) so nowhere to neatly tuck away coins / keys / etc..

All in all, decent value for money and I'm satisfied, even without the extra gear. But if I got the Yaris or Mazda 2 or a Korean I suspect I'd be writing a similar comment - I don't think you can go wrong with any of these cars at the prices they're going for with 5+ years warranty.

    Corolla

  • Bit more info might help, driven mostly in town, highway or mix? Carrying passengers around regularly? Can you drive a manual? Are you after something with good safety, like AEB and the likes? Anything else?

Good to see you're considering Japanese brands (even though the Jazz is made in Thailand). Kia/Hyundai worth a look also.

Keep in mind current shape Yaris is nearly 10 years, well and truly due for new gen model.

Coming early next year, hybrid too

      • Isn't that what the prius C is?

        • Borderline, but it's a bit bigger than the Yaris

No doubt having all these new hybrid models will push the old Prius range out the door, though I think Toyota keep them around as they like saying how many hybrid models we have

          • @spackbace: Will they ever have a hybrid hilux? XD (but no one tell Michaelia Cash…)

            • @Levathian: Yeah they will, they just don't know how it will be implemented just yet.

Best towing we have is 1.5T out of hybrid currently, that's the problem. But every model in our line-up will have a hybrid option in the coming years.

  • Consider the Swift as well, good little runabout

Fwiw I haven't voted in the poll 😉

  • Second to test drive both cars. I've driven both and don't really like the Jazz, but that's just my personal preference, a lot of people like it. Corolla is better and I think it's worth to spend more for the long run.

Also consider how easy will it be to service your car with either brand.

The only thing I will recommend is to check out the service schedules of both/any cars you look at. When I was looking a year ago, the Jazz was the only car in the Honda range which had a 6-month schedule while the rest had 12-months. This may not be important to you but it does add extra cost onto the yearly maintenance of the car and the inconvenience of an extra service. When I was looking I had narrowed down to the Hyundai Accent and the Jazz but as much as I loved the Jazz I couldn't justify the extra cost with my budget at the time.

  • Consider a Kia Picanto and Suzuki Ignis as well
