Exetel NBN Provisioning - Require an Existing Phone Number Which Doesn't Exist. Want Me to Plug Analogue Phone into NBN Wallsock

I've taken ownership of a new apartment and the previous owner had NBN connected - the building has FTTB.

I completed an online order with Exetel and left the field 'Your phone number (The fixed line at your address): [leave blank if you don't know]' blank.

24Hrs later I get an email Subject: 'We need a phone number'

What phone number are they referring to?

The email had a TIP -

"TIP: If you don't know the number at the above address, plug in a handset and dial 12 722 123. A recorded message with the phone number will be played back to you."

So I plug an analogue phone directly into the Rj11 wall socket - and no dial tone - which was no surprise - I can't plug an analogue phone directly into a digital NBN wall-point. Trying to explain this to them is near impossible .

What should I do - the request is in limbo and will automatically cancel shortly.

Call telstra and see if you can activate the line for on a monthly contract
Once live and you have the number - cancel the contract

    • Once an area goes live with NBN, you can’t order a PSTN/ADSL connection at all.

    try a different provider
alternatively see if TPG fttb is available

Try to find out the previous phone number that was active there. Otherwise go with someone else.

  • a digital NBN wall-point.

Did you try a digital telephone??

  • This persons experience with Exetel is concerning to me. A month ago our area went live for FTTC NBN. I chose to kick off our NBN experience with Aussie Broadband as they were offering $20 off new customers for the first six months. While ABB have been brilliant $79.95 per month is a bit much for us retirees to justify spending.

So I've been eyeing Exetel or Tangerine for when our promotion period with ABB finishes.

We've never had access to adsl in our small street - more than 5 kilometres from an exchange plus pair-gained phone lines. As a result we've used mobile broadband for the past decade and ditched our fixed line telephone.

Ironically before we moved to the Telstra network for faster speeds and reliability we were with Exetel and apart from when our credit card expired and their monthly payment request was rejected by the bank and culminating in Exetel temporarily booting us, we found them a reliable provider.
