AmEx Explorer VS AmEx Velocity Platinum

Hi guys,

So i'm looking to apply for one of these two cards. Since the AmEx point restructure came into effect earlier in the year, I believe it has basically balanced these cards out in terms of points per $.

I'm not fussed at all about the sign up bonus as I already hold an AmEx Velocity escape card.

So what ya'll think?

  • If you feel that $375 per year is worth paying for a free return VA flight (to select airports), 2 VA domestic lounge passes, 2 Amex Melbourne or Sydney international lounge passes, and an extra 0.5 velocity points earned per dollar, then go ahead and upgrade.

Already being in the Velocity camp, you would be more inclined to stay in it. (I initially missed the explorer point of the post)

    • The explorer card i can transfer the AmEx points to velocity points a 1 point per $ spent.

  • One gives you a 'free' flight, the other doesn't. For roughly the same price, id go the velocity.

    • "free" flight is only domestic. The $400 travel credit that the explorer gives can be used on international flights too.

      • Well i live in Perth. and use the free flight to go Sydney/Melbourne often. So personally I think the flight is better than $400 credit, as sometimes I cant even get flights eastbound for that amount.

Unfortunately you can’t claim the free flight to/from Perth if the flight origin is not Perth ☹️
