I'm travelling in december and have a 15 hour layover, hoping to take advantage of this - but I booked on an external site so i dont think i can book the hotel on the CS website (which is hard to navigate anyway).

Does anyone have experiences with this? And booking the room at the airport counter upon arrival?

Yes! I had a long layover at Guangzhou and I was pleasantly surprised when they offered overnight accommodation.
The process started with handing your passport over to the office and waiting for approx 15-20 minutes before they directed you to the airport counter to select your preferred accommodation. I chose the closest one which was a 15 minute drive away via shuttle. Unfortunately I don't remember the hotel name but they offered Chinese buffet breakfast as part of the package.
The room I got was fantastic, two comfortable beds with a great bathroom including amenities (shampoo/conditioner/body wash/toothbrush/toothpaste). Although I have to admit the level I was on stunk as smoking in rooms is allowed so I would recommend you asking them for a non-smoking room if available (if it bothers you).
They also organise your airport return according to your flight departure time. It was a smooth process, no hassles and a good nights sleep after a long and tiresome flight!
I hope this helps and enjoy your holiday in December :)

    • This is exactly my experience as well. I also booked through an external site.

    • Thank you!! This is so helpful. This is everything I wanted to know. I am glad the process seems largely seamless and straight forward.

Did you manage to get out and explore GZ for a bit?

  • What external site did you use and still got the free layover? I am looking at trying to get a flight from PER > FRU and there seems to be a lot of China Southern options with stopovers in Guangzhou and Urumqi. However the prices on Skyscanner are the only ones worth booking. Direct CSA prices are almost 1.5-2x.

I booked through BYOjet, which has been quite seamless.

Although my flights have since changed due to CSA schedule changes but BYOjet were really accomodating in communicating to us the changes and giving us our preferential new flights through CSA

      • And you got the free hotel even since booking through byojet?

        • i think so, i think the hotel is only bookable 180 days from departure though - but the CSA website is rubbish. I think regardless of where you booked, if you have the layover thats 8+ hours theyll give you the free hotel.

          • @tj12345: Thanks, mate. the flight I am looking at has the overnight stopover in Urumqi… wonder if I'll get the free hotel there since its not Guangzhou?
