So many people want to pay with Paypal. So many accept it failing to realise the only person who benefits is the buyer. As a seller you put yourself in exactly this position when accepting Paypal.

Have they opened a case with Paypal? I suspect they could just do a chargeback with their CC if, in the unlikely event, Paypal doesn't refund them.

Expect to lose your money and the item.

Hopefully you have pictures and documentation saying what it is. If the buyer is convincing enough they could get a refund from Paypal that comes from your account and who knows what item they return to you (paypal doesn't care).

For gumtree and facebook I never do paypal as a seller. Cash or cleared EFT (watch for cheques dropped into an atm - never had one myself but you see stories)

        • Even if Paypal doesn't directly refund them, they can still do a CC chargeback - which, in my opinion, is much easier. With Amex, it's a few clicks of the mouse.

  • Was this an in person transaction or did you post it ?

    • i posted it and have tracking

  • I thought that paypal don't honor refunds on personal payments. Could be wrong. Others may be able to assist. Always do Facebook and Gumtree purchases as cash so its hassle free. It lessons the change of a buyer as they may not be in your location. I get many people not looking where I am selling item and then the sale doesn't happen as postage too high or other issues. Should be just cash on pick up. Then buyer can look at it, you get the cash. Everyone is happy. I wouldn't worry about it.

Tell them to send it back, don't bother arguing with them.

If you accept the return, they have to send it back in the same condition you sent it

    • Do this OP, Paypal are toxic towards sellers no matter how much evidence you have.

Folks, if you’re selling anything privately on FB Marketplace or Gumtree for instance, only ever accept cash on pick up.

If it’s a large sum of money meet the buyer inside a bank, a Post Office, or even a Police Station. Mostly the sorts of numbers won’t warrant this, but if it’s a car for example and they absolutely insist on cash, (always insist on a money order if you possibly can) then you can meet them @ the bank or P.O and have the money counted there and then.

I’ve sold loads of things and I’ve never used PayPal. If someone wants to use PayPal, bad luck I’m afraid.

  • I thought PayPal does not do protection on Gumtree/FB? Couldn’t see it specifically in the ToC (likely looking in the wrong place), but I recall reading about this a while ago. It’s Ebay that’s the real issue…?

  • Hi looking to buy tickets for an event off gumtree, seller has agreed to use paypal. Whats the safest way to go to make this happen. Any help greatly appreciated :)
