  • Does he have any lenses or anything currently?

What does he want it for?

  • No it will be his first one.
Basically he is into photography so I am thinking of gifting him.
    Didn’t ask him really.

Canon and Nikon brands are quite comparable. Canon for an entry level user is recommended. Any entry level DSLR would be fine, its the lens that matter. Do not buy anything with the standard 18-55mm lens, get a minimum 18-135mm lens kit with the camera.

When I started I got a 550D with 18-55mm lens which I upgraded in no time to 18-135mm. Bought a few more since, but the 18-55mm is useless.

    • Thanks for detail explanation 😀

I would somewhat disagree with that advice.

My experience with the Nikon 18-55mm lens. Nikon bundle it with many of their cameras and it's normally adds only $100 to the regular retail price compared to the body only. However the packages with the 18-55mm lens are often deeply discounted. If you find a really good deal on a camera with that lens I would not necessarily avoid it.

It's true that the 18-55mm lens likely to be set aside once a better lens has been obtained. However, it's a decent middle of the road lens to get started and your brother can buy a better lens later. Lens choice is very much a personal taste. Now that mirrorless cameras are in fashion, second hand Nikon and Canon DSLR lenses can be purchased for a decent price.

        • Agreed. 18-55mm stock Nikon lens is perfectly fine for a beginner.

After that you'd look at a decent prime lens ie. 50mm f/1.8. If still hooked on photography then your brother can branch into the more expensive lens ie. 24-85mm f/2.8 upwards.

Canon 200d hands down best value for money

    • Same. I believe there is a newer model which recently got announced but honestly the body doesn't make much difference as long as it has the key features you need (e.g. swivel screen, lightweight, easy connectivity to phone, etc).

I'm VERY happy with my Canon 200D with the single kit lens (got mine just pre-Christmas for $560 from JB Hifi; less 5% gift cards from Suncorp).

With the leftover change you can potentially get a nice DSLR bag ($50-$100), a memory card, a spare battery, the very popular Canon 50mm f/1.8 prime lens (circa $150), a Speedlite flash (eg Speedlite 430 EX III circa $350; although plenty of cheaper options but try to get one which is TTL for automatic ease for beginners), a tripod (I didn't get one but you could get a decent beginners one for $100-$200), etc..

If I could do it again I may have tried to find the dual kit lens kit but it's a bit harder to find on sale.

I used to have a Canon dslr. I suggest you budget for a cheap 50mm or similar fixed lens, on top of whatever zoom lens you get with it (the 18-135 kit as suggested is pretty versatile).

Reason being, despite being pretty impractical, the cheapest fixed lens from Canon (about $150) took amazing looking pictures compared to anything I had seen from the standard kit lenses. It's a bit more effort to use, but the quality craps all over anything I had seen in the previous 2 years with the kit. And if he's into photography, the limitations of a fixed lens aren't going to be such a dealbreaker. 50mm isn't good for wider shots, but works well for portraits and some street photography.

The only downside is that most people get by with only the kit and don't know what they are missing out on, but seeing what the crappiest upgrade could do made me realise that more expensive lenses might actually have a lot to offer.
And it is not a cheap hobby.

In fact I often hear it's better to get an old, used camera body, and put money towards better lenses.

Just saw this - I find the EF 50mm f/1.8 lens from Canon to be amazing. It has epic reviews, and is reasonably cheap at circa $150-$160 when on sale (eg Kogan currently has it at $171 delivered which is more than the $159 I paid from there in Dec 2018).

Cameras can be a personal thing. I went with Nikon because it felt better when holding it (ergonomics, etc).

m43 cameras are another to consider. Lenses are much smaller and lighter, and also cheaper. Great for travelling with because you end up with a small kit. eg https://www.digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au/panasonic-g85-digi…

It really depends what your brother wants and what he will be using it for.

Without knowing the use we can't really recommend anything specific. Eg. If he says video, wants to shoot sports, nighttime etc will all influence what camera and lens to get.

What will he take photos of?

  • As others have suggested the 200D is hard to pass up at its current price point of $655. The latest II iteration of it will set you back $1050.

The Mirrorless Canon EOS M50 ($749) is also a decent camera for someone not looking for a larger DSLR:

  • Fuji mirrorless, great design and feel great in the hand and lenses are beautifully made
