Best Sim for Fleet Tracking?

Figured you guys would be in the know, as I have no idea. Can anyone recommend sim cards good for vehicle tracking?

I own a fleet of small machines I hire out. I purchased a few cheap trackers off ebay long time ago I still have sitting in my cupboard cause I can never seem to come across a cheap enough sim for what im after.

Im trying to find one that obviously doesnt need call credit or I dont think it even needs data (its been so long since I read how it works) but from memory I just text something to the unit and it texts back a location I can put into googlemaps etc to see where the machine currently is?

I would prefer sims that have like 365 day expiry on them also, as 30 day ones will just be maintenance or time I cant be bothered with to keep the account up with (unless I have no other choice). I suppose I could probably setup auto payment but just another hassle and cashflow thing to manage.

The tracking is more for my convenience rather then security. The machines are obviously all insured - it really would be handy just to check at times when I have a feeling people are (or going to be) running late to return the machine, knowing exactly where it is at one point in time would make my afternoon abit easier to organise.

Aldi Mobile. I use them on my GPS trackers and they cost $5 and the credit lasts all year. Costs next to nothing, and you get the Telstra service area.

My trackers use almost no data so I still have like 4.95 on them and they have been running for 5 months.

Link to the gps trackers you use please?

    • It's $5 for the first year, then $15/year for the following years unless you port out and back in to a new sim.

  • My Amaysim POSTPAID (not prepaid) cards seem to not ever expire - I've not used them in probably 2 years, and I still get the recurring email 'we'll add any usage to your next bill!'. It DOES say 365 day expiry - but that's not actually been enforced that I've experienced. Other Optus MVNOs may or may not be the same.

The online account shows the SIMs still active, and I'm not getting pinged any monthly fees. So for a 'once every so often' use, these would seem to work for you. 15c /SMS, and 15c/Mb is killer, but for GPS tracking that'd seem the cheapest option in the long run.

  • Thanks guys im sure one of these options will be all I need. Appreciated.

  • As a comparison, the trackOmeter trackers https://www.trackometer.net/car-tracking use between 10-50Mb/month, you could get under 10Mb if you only drive for a few hours a week. you could enable sleep mode on your trackers so they don't track if the tracker is not moving.
