Is it Possible to Change the Opal Login Username?

Has anyone had any luck changing their opal card email address?

I tried the method in the Service NSW portal, but you still need to login with the old "username = email address".

Long story short. I am abandoning my hotmail account but after 90 days someone else can reassign themselves to mine. I think Yahoo has some similar problem. I don't want anyone to be able to login to my account because the username is still the old one…

Is just changing the contact details enough?

Appreciate any help. ;-)

  • You can't do it yourself, or at least I couldn't find any way to. You have to email or call customer service. Just did it myself recently. Took about 2 weeks to get it sorted as they're not exactly fast to respond.

  • What did TfNSW say when you asked?

  • Raise an online ticket with them on the website. They responded within a couple of days. Put your new user name in the ticket and ask them to change it.

  • My username is a word completely different unrelated to my email address.

So I think if you just change your email in the contact details that would be enough. But your username (which is your old email address) would still be the same.

If anyone got your old email address, they shouldn't be receiving your emails from opal.

It might be good for you to try it now while you still have your older email address. Change the contact email, logout, see what happens when you click "forgot your password".

If the username is an inconvenience but they can't help you change it, I guess you can unlink all your opal cards, put in a spare email address (or if you have Gmail do the Gmail trick, putting a period "[email protected]" or adding something between your username and the @ "[email protected]"), and make a new account with a new username "bunnydowndog".

  • I had a very short username on Opal (think one character, got it very early). My account constantly used to get locked out due to others trying to log into it…

The only option they had to 'fix' it was to change my username, and it can be done over the phone.

Now, they have a minimum character count for usernames.
