Rules for Aussie Basketball Local Legues + NBL

Hey guys and gals,
Lately I’ve been playing bball for a local league in aus specifically in victoria and i am really confused with many of the rules that are currently in play. I’ve been whistled for travelling after faking a jump shot and then taking a step before bouncing the ball, and also moves that should be comsidered a jab step after a catch but the referees here consider it a travel unless you bounce the ball first. Watching the nba has really impacted negatively somewhat on my plays in aus. I would at least want to see a list of the rules to see where the refs get their reasonings from so resources like that would be useful thanks!

NBA occasionally ignores rules if it is unlikely to impact the game, ie Lebrons very frequent travelling. No one really complains because he could likely have taken an extra bounce but instead of a dunk, it would have been some half assed layup.

They don't let these offences slide when it is a pivotal part of an important match.

Everything you described is clearly an offence, a typical frustration when I played pickup games with international students. Pump steps, jabs and hop steps are all very technical and are heavily dependant on how you received a pass or initiated your step.

Play in a competitive league, attend training and be open minded to criticism during the training. You'll learn proper rules and improve a lot quicker than social games and pickup games. Those are good for general fitness only.

Ps. NBA has some unique rules too. Just look at the court dimensions and lines. Also watch the Olympics and notice how often they are caught out.

    • Harden's double stepback.

  • you have to have one foot planted unless you dribble

You are watching the NBA and thinking that is the norm.

The FIBA interpretation is much more relaxed nowadays but you still cannot lift your pivot foot before you dribble.

You can jab step but your pivot foot cannot leave the ground.

thats what i just learnt. As a rule noob i thought the rule took effect if your pivot foot touches the ground. Didnt realise that simply lifting it off the floor will activate the travel call. I had the tendency to dribble as i took my pivot foot off. Here’s the thing. Can the ref even tell if you have dribbled first or lift your foot off first if you were to do it simultaneously? If the ball left your hand is that considered a dribble yet or does it have to touch the floor?

  • can you post a video of your actions?

If your lebron James you can take 7 steps before bouncing.

    • I think you missed a K in there.

      • Better than missing a step

  • They are much stricter on travel calls in my son's U11 basketball than in the NBA…..

    • The NBA is as much an entertainment franchise as it is a sporting league.

NBA would starting looking like EPL if they enforced the rules to the letter.

College basketball is as strict as FIBA.

  • Come, let me teach you the right way to play basketball

    • you think you're good? swing by The Rocks and we'll do some quick 1 on 1 pickup.

      • I live in rooty hills, we are generally quite good at basketball

        • you're Filo, aren't you?
