Getting a View at Shangri-La

== have accidentally posted this in wrong area sorry. Can it be moved to travel? Tha ks. ==

Hi All,

I am a keen photographer and have just booked a room at the Shangri-la Hotel in Sydney in their Sydney Harbour View room. I am hoping to get some great photos of the Quay area during Vivid.

It was quite expensive so I want to make the most of the opportunity. I know that Shangri-la is a big (tall hotel) and I am worried that I may have a lesser view than the photos on the website.

Does anyone have good advice on ensuring I get a good room? More chance to get allocated one if I check in early or is there anything I should ask reception? Even if anyone has stayed there before and can comment.

Thanks. Advice and comments much appreciated. :)

When you booked did you put in "special requests" that you wanted a high floor with a view of Circular Quay?

Best way to ensure you get a room that is to your liking is to actually get in touch with the hotel before you arrive.

    • Thanks Ace. Not sure there was a field for special requests on the booking form but maybe I should just give them a call.

I would call them directly to discuss options as their definition of "view" can vary greatly, even in a single room category.

Also they are probably booked out because of Vivid but if you be very nice to reception upon check-in, if they weren't busy (or you were prepared to wait) and if they had multiple rooms available, you might be able to ask to view a few different options in-person and then choose the one you like best.

  • You're better off going to the Amex Vivid lounge and try your luck there. Quay isn't much chop if you're expecting that to be a decent vantage point. I was at the Quay last Friday you certainly wouldn't want to be lugging your DLSR setup there - the windows would've reflecting like a mofo as well.

EDIT: keep in mind Shangri-la is so far away from Amex lounge or Quay, I reckon you would struggle with anything but a 300mm from Quay/Amex lounge if your aim is the Opera house…Shangri-la probably needed something longer or with extenders.

Isn't there a bar up the top of the Shangri-La with views over the harbour?

    Blu Bar on 36.

    • This.

      Awesome bar with awesome views

not that awesome where you usually have to wait for your turn for the next available seats. Feels like waiting at a popular milk tea shop

This will obviously depend on the specific room type you have booked … I see the Sydney Harbour Rooms come in Deluxe, Executive, Premier and Grand Premier versions. My bet is that the more you've paid, the higher up your room is likely to be.

As others have said, call the hotel directly and see what they can do, but it will be driven primarily by what class of room you've booked.

Book a club room floor. Great views from the Horizon club.
Room 3007 has great views too. It's right next to the club.

Thanks. Is club room one of the room types I can book online? I don't remember seeing this one.

Any advice in how to get 3007? Just ring them and ask if that one is available?

Go to their altitude restaurant for a walk around and your views will be 360

  • Last time I stayed, the view direction and the floors your room would fall on was listed on the website. The higher the floor with the better view the more expensive, obviously.

Premier grand I think are the best located in terms of view (and most expensive of the standard rooms). Horizon rooms are same but higher floors and have the club access.

From memory room numbers that are 13 are the corner rooms on the circular quay side of the building that have views looking out to Kirribilli (harbour bridge/opera house) as well as the other side looking towards eastern suburbs - that might be handy if you want to see the city buildings although if you aren’t high enough you might be blocked.

Caveat - I haven’t stayed there for a few years so they may have renumbered everything. I’d call the concierge and have a chat maybe just say it’s a special occasion and you want it to be really extra nice - they can probably advise you what to book and allocate the room. I’ve found - in general - the online booking systems/offshore call centres seem to no longer have the local human touch.

    Have fun!

For those suggesting public areas, please spare a thought for people trying to enjoy those areas. It’s one thing to take a quick snap, quite another to set up a photo shoot.
