[PS4, XB1, PC, Steam] Free - Destiny 2 Plus 2 DLCs (to Be Known as Destiny 2: New Light)

1680

Big news overnight on the future of Destiny 2.

From September 17 October 1, the current version of Destiny 2 base game and its two DLCs - Curse of Osiris and Warmind- will be launched as a new free to play version known as Destiny 2: New Light.

The current version of Destiny 2 is retailing through JB Hifi for $29.

More info.

The (Shadowkeep) expansion also marks Destiny's move off Battlenet and onto Steam (sayonara, Activision!) and will introduce a free-to-play model that sees Bungie charging for standalone expansions, but giving all the year one content away gratis. The move will also introduce cross-saves for Xbox, Stadia, and yes, PS4 players as well.

The base game will be rebranded as Destiny 2: New Light. The free version includes all of the year one missions, activities, and rewards. That will include Strikes (three-player co-op dungeons), player vs. player Crucible modes, and even the original Leviathan raids.

  • Ermahgerd! Cross saves?? So I can’t take all my Xbox characters over to PS4? I’m all for That!

    In 102 days

      Glad it's not 103.

      • +25

        Yeah, deal breaker on 103.

        • +1

Well here we are 102 days later. Did it happen?

          • +1

            @Ge3ks: I wouldn't have remembered.

            I'll check it tomorrow 👍

            • @Salmando: It got moved ro October 1. They needed a bit more time to refine things.

  • -1

So it's Free with a $0 saving since it's free.

    • It's free, with a saving of ~29 dollarinìgläbs

  • +2

Damn, I paid $5 and still haven't installed it yet!

    • PC players got it for free. I think I played about 5 mins.

      • Got it free on ps4 a while ago. Did the into, got to a town thing, and abandoned it. Too confusing compared to first

        • you were confused when it held your hand?

          • +1

@Kozhutki: I think it wanted me to read what was happening, without being interesting enough for me to care.
I was suddenly free to move, with markers in every direction, non of which seemed exiting

            • +1

@Salmando: the story is awful so i don't blame you. it's so cringy and filled with bad writing

  • -1

I still believe all these type of games should be free* from the beginning. Same with fighting games. All the vanilla versions anyway.

    • I agree with you, but I think it's fair to charge for brawlers.

  • What if I am a sad individual who played it both on PS4 and PC. I wonder how the cross saving will work without wiping something out.

  • +1

I had been on the fence whether to buy the expansions or not.
Glad I hadn't pulled the trigger.

    • 102 days though…
      Ps5/Xbtwo release maybe?

  • -1

Do i get a refund for already buying?

  • +6

Don't do it. They just want to hook you to milk you with pathetic DLC content drops in the future.

Sincerely previous D1 and Burned D2 Player

    • -1

It’s all about the new updated Eververse. Good lord that store looks totally like a loot box/pay to win/pay to play game now. It’s all geared around paying in “silver” and the in game currency stuff is buried 4 pages deep as a foot note.

  • Thanks, just saved me $9 going to EB and buying it.

    • But can you wait 3+ months?

  • -2

You mean like Epic made Save The World free at the start of this year? Oh wait…

Promises from video game companies are like promises from politicians. Don't count on them!

  • +1

Nice but people like me will probably forget about it after 3 month.

    • Just set a reminder here.

    • Reminder!

  • So does the Destiny 2: Forsaken - Legendary Collection have anything else worthwhile? Have never played a Destiny game

    • it has the full forsaken DLC. So the raid and dungeon and exotic quests etc, whereas this free version doesn't
Questionably worth the extra money. But thats comparing to its price now, when you have to wait 100 days for this deal and forsaken bundle will also be cheaper then.
Plus by then im 99% certain they will sell a full bundle copy that has forsaken, and all year 2 DLC, plus shadowkeep (whats coming out in spetember)

      • I quit after Curse of Osiris, but I'll probably just play New Light and hold off purchasing any Forsaken/Shadow Keep stuff until they release a bundle with Forsaken and Shadow Keep included.

Forsaken should be free or bundled in with Shadow Keep.

  • Do people that already own it get anything special or unique?

    • +1

The ability to have already played it.
What more are you looking for???

      • Dunno. Cool emote or something.

  • -1

    sits and waits patiently

  • +1

Honestly, I don’t know why people that purchased it previously are complaining.

Forgetting about the “you probably got your money’s worth” argument, making the base game F2P will give it a healthy boost to active players.

This means you won’t get steamrolled by the same 6-stack over and over again in PVP, or will be able to more easily find a group for PvE content.

More people playing the game is a good thing!

    • -1

I bought the expansions and haven't played them yet so feel a bit ripped off here.
My fault for not putting the time in, or the games for not being good enough ?

      • +1

You can only get out of it what you put in. I can't be pissed at BFV or RDR2 because I purchased them yet haven't played them.

        • well thats because nobodies giving away those games for free? thats not even the same situation. I bet you would be a bit annoyed if they gave those games away free tomorrow, or right when you finally decide to play them.
im not mad about this, but just what you were saying was jabbawockey.

          • @thearbiter117: So, going by that logic no game should ever be given away for free (unless it is straight from the start) as there will always be plenty of people who will have paid full price or some money for it.

HB gave away many games that many people would have bought at full price or at some price:

            Guacamelee STCE
            Age of Wonders II
            Darkness II
            Declassfified etc.

I do not think that this is the consequence you want.
If companies give away games for free that is great. We should not complain about it.
I guess the lesson is: do not buy a game unless you want to play it SOON. If you do so, you do at your own risk of it being given away or in a cheap bundle in the future.

            • @Lysander: Oh dont get me wrong i have played the hell out of it, not like the other guy. and im fairly happy with my moneys worth. its just hard not to feel like my moneys worth would have been even better if the money was $0 like it will be for people now.
I definitely get what you are saying, should always be happy about some free stuff. but really thats more true if you are the person getting the free stuff, not having something given out yopu have spent $150 on. The bigger annoyance here is like i said in a reply to snuke. with how much bungie has "jewed" (again sorry) its players then to give this all away for free to new comers, its hard not to feel a little ripped off or like the treatment is a bit unfair.

          • @thearbiter117:

I bet you would be a bit annoyed if they gave those games away free tomorrow, or right when you finally decide to play them.

No, it was solely my decision to purchase them when I did, and then not play them.
I don't get annoyed for others gain.

            • @snuke: Its your loss more so than others gain though. As in "i paid money when i could have got it for free", i dont care that others get it for free per se, a smidge jealous sure, but its more annoyed that I could have gotten it for free.
Its just with how hard bungie has constantly (excuse the insensitive internet slang) 'jewed' the hell out its players nonstop to then give this much away for free. its hard for it to not feel at least a little unfair.

              • @thearbiter117: How in anyway is it my loss? I paid for an item, and had the opportunity to play it.
Re D2 specifically, I have had 2 years of playing the hell out out of it. I didn't feel any loss or slighted when it was free on PlayStation Plus, again, I had more than got my money out of by that time.
It's great that now the game is older, and like most things, depreciated in value, that others have a lower entry pint to join in.
Others gain is not your loss.

    • +1

But even on PC i never struggle to find anything (except comp at end of season, but thats because crucible is condensed aids most of the time anyway what with P2P and shit matchmaking).
I'm not mad, at most slightly annoyed. i guess more people is good like you say even if it has (just)'enough' already. its still hard not to feel a little ripped off when some aussies would have spent about $180+ on that content (i at least got base game free with a GPU and sales on each DLC so im only like $110 down)

  • The date is incorrect. It's free now, on PC at least.

  • +1

The date has changed to October 1st.

why would you bother though - it's now free?

      • +1

EB hoping to find some poor uninformed soul to buy them. They shouldn't even be selling this, they just need to take the loss and put them in landfill.

      • Didn't notice it was for free, if anyone doesn't have Destiny's 2 and downloading for PS4, it's 87.603 GB, including patch.
