Tourist Refund Scheme Claimback - Imported Good (Paid GST)

Hey guys, I'll be heading off to Japan in a month and was wondering whether an item with the following would be eligible.

The item itself costs $549.99AUD + $35.85AUD shipping + $58.59AUD GST = $644.43AUD, however, the item itself will be an import from America off EBAY.

The TRS info page states: "goods purchased over the internet and imported into Australia" are not eligible. Does this mean that as it is not an Australian company, the tax burden of GST lies on me solely and I won't be able to make a claim through TRS?

Any helps appreciated!

No you can't claim GST for the imported / from non-Australian seller.

    • cheers thanks mate!

I think GST paid overseas are not traceable. GST paid paid in Australia with ABN can be tracked. Therefore you can claim your money back. I hope this helps.

    • I think you're right. Although I'll be buying it from an American company (exporter) so they wont have an ABN :( Thanks though!

If eBay collected the GST on behalf of someone else…then no (if my understanding is correct).

If eBay was the seller and had an ABN, then yes.

I've had Amazon purchases that came from Amazon US, BUT Amazon AU was the seller (the one I actually paid). I was able to claim TRS successfully.

So…did you purchase from an Australian company with an ABN and have the appropriate tax invoice with GST included? If yes, you should be fine. Otherwise…no.

The purpose of the scheme is to encourage people to buy from Australian businesses instead of foreign ones.

    • How does it do that if you bring it back to Australia with you there is a good chance that you will have to repay the GST?

      • Foreign tourists departing can also get refunds and they're not likely to bring the goods back into Australia.

For Australian residents it depends on the value. Technically the same applies to anything else you buy overseas anyway. $900 per person covers most incidentals people may buy overseas (clothes small electronics etc).

An alternative is a tax drawback, but you need a Customs Broker to do it. Not worth it for a small amount as a broker charges $150+ for the service generally.

    seriously……. you needed to ask?

Did you buy the item on the internet? Yes you did.
Did you import the item into Australia? Yes you did….

  • What is the ABN on your tax invoice? If there is an ABN, it means the goods sold to you is from an Australian entity and you should be able to claim GST back.

    • Yeah I didn't make the purchase yet I was just doing a bit of research before I bought - It looks like since the business isn't Australian (hence no ABN) it won't be eligible for the claim…

  • Maybe just have it sent to the country you're visiting (assuming they don't charge any import GST and there's time for you to arrange that). Might be able to have it sent to the hotel you'll be staying at for examples.
