Looking for a laptop for High school/TAFE/University. Max budget $500

Hey everyone just wondering if anyone would know of any "decent" enough laptops for this price range. Just need it for online research, typing up assignments on word and running one drive. Does anyone have any recommendations?

https://www.ebay.com.au/str/GraysOnline-Australia/Laptops-Ne… I would recommend any of the lenovo, Yoga 330, Ideapad 330s or over budget the lenovo yoga 530 for $559

I ended up buying a Lenovo Ideapad 100s off grays online for only $150 and i've been using it for uni work the last year ands its been fantastic! I just ended up putting an ssd in it and its perfect for me.

So basically u dont have to spend more then $150 if you get lucky, but if you do you can grab some bargains for sure from them.

EDIT: they have 20% off now aswell

I've had trouble with Gray's Online refub Lenovos. 2/3 were defective.
One I just returned for my money back.
One I sent back for repairs, then it malfunctioned again, send it back, they said it was not fixable and had no replacement so they refunded me.
Maybe I just got unlucky. Can't fault the service but I'll never buy a refurb Lenovo again.

I've bought a bunch of Grays Online refurb Lenovo laptops as well. All near new <2 year old release models. 2 out of 6 had faults. They definitely do not properly test them as the 2 had faults (1x screen, 1x DOA) was immediately obviously upon first boot.

On the other hand all 6 machines looked brand new out of the box. Not a single mark except for the serial number scratched off and small GraysOnline warranty sticker stuck on.

Gray's Online were super easy to return, emailed the return label, money quickly refunded each time.

You can pick up some amazing bargains for near new Lenovos but be prepared to return a subpar or faulty one.

Go on Lenovo/Dell refurbished. Even grays online. There are always ebay sales.

You want to be looking at Business grade computers. Anything from HN or JB will be crap, with the exception of some of the higher end 2 in ones.

Just be very careful never to run a blacklight over a second hand laptop.

    • then how will OP know what parts to avoid?

  • Might want to look at going refurb like Knick007 said, or second-hand on Gumtree if you're confident with your level of knowledge and okay with taking the time to look through your options. I've found some solid ones going for cheap because the users are the type who upgrade to the newest tech every year or two, or they have minor, easily reparable issues.

  • Buy a good condition used Lenovo X250/X260 off ebay. Heaps of used business models for $250-400. Just make sure it has a SSD.

Excellent quality 12.5" screen, nice and light to take to uni, nearly everything is replaceable, batteries of all sizes available. Built like a little tank with an excellent keyboard to type on.
