Free Software for Parental Control to Block Certain Sites for Kids on Laptop?

Hi all,

Just seeing if there is any good parental control software too block certain sites for kids?
Obviously, kids shouldn't be able to uninstall it as that makes it pointless.

Does any such simple software exist?

Set Up Parental Controls in Windows? It's free and is built in. It allows you to block websites and applications.

There's so many creative ways to bypass parental control. Kids will find one eventually.

    • It's educational software

  • I have been using K9 on a windows PC.
It was the only free solution that worked for me with the granularity I wanted.
However it seems that has recently been withdrawn as it was acquired by Symanatec.

I didn't want to use Windows Family parental controls as it required the kids to have an online Microsoft account
and I have them set up with offline local accounts.

If the laptop is just used at home some routers can be provisioned to use custom DNS for specific devices that provides the same blocking functionality.
    Lookup cleanbrowsing and opendns

  • Sophos Home also allows you to block certain types of websites, pretty sure you can also block certain URLs. Also free Anti-Virus

You could block certain websites at router level.

Or even better, check out opendns.

    • Yeah we tried software solutions at one point but he figured them out pretty quickly. Using the opendns family filter sorted things out.

      • How do you setup the opendns family filler? Couldn't work out what to do on opendns website

        • You need to log into your modem/router and put the open dns address in the DNS settings section. Depending on your router it might be in the WAN section. You'll see setting something like the following:

Connect to DNS server automatically select 'no'
          DNS server 1 input 208.67.220.220
          DNS server 2 input 208.67.222.222

Those are the open DNS family safe servers.

Click on 'save' or 'apply' in your router. You might have to reboot it. Wait 10 minutes or so then try to get to a pron site, it should be blocked.

    • The next thing you know, the kids are browsing with Tor browser that bypasses DNS and IP level firewall. That's what happened at my place :(

      • You could set static IP address and then assign a rule to the child's address that restricts tor.

        • Yup. Already got static IP address on internal dnsmasq with customised DNS rules & firewall rules. Only if Tor is that easy to defeat. Locked down computer provided by the school so parents can't put anything on (but somehow she is able to install portable Tor browser).

          • @scotty: :). That is surprisingly. I guess kids are way ahead.

  • this has many different types of software, sometimes what you are looking for crops up.

    website blurb….

Giveaway Radar covers all relevant giveaway sites plus some other giveaways and promotions. However, nobody can cover everything, so we do not even try! Our aim is to provide you with as many "good" giveaways as we can. So we search the web and pick the good ones for you.

A "good" giveaway comes with a license for at least one year and is available for everyone! Nevertheless, we make an exception for anti-virus software* (which needs to be updated daily) and VPN services (because you are using bandwidth at the costs of others). The limit for VPNs is a license for at least three months.

Giveaway Radar does not support contests or competitions where a few "lucky winners" will be drawn randomly. For us, EVERYONE HAS TO BE A WINNER ! We also do not list "Share and Win-Giveaways" and "giveaways" where people are forced to write a certain number of comments or to "like" something on Facebook first, before they can participate.

    • Giveaways with a license for less than six months will be considered extended trial versions and are not worth to be mentioned!
  • Thanks guys. I guess windows is the only option.

The router doesn't fully work as they can use laptop at school.

Basically this is to block social media apps on their school computer as they are bit sneaky as they are on laptop all the time with excuse of doing homework. So sometimes not clear if they studying or just distracted on social media
