I don't think any logistics company can ship that package from UK to Australia for $5.64 and make money. It's got to be subsidised.
For ordinary customers, it costs around 4 pounds (~$6) to send a 300g parcel with Royal Mail. Now, obviously Amazon will pay a lower price for shipping because they ship in volume and most likely have some sort of agreement with these companies.

Because they are trying to wipe out book depository who gave free postage worldwide before amazon UK did! They must be losing money on it. Amazon US hasn't done it yet…
I think that's the more likely scenario
