George Orwell died in 1951 and wrote 1984 in 1948. It's scary to see how his fiction based warning novel has literally eventuated after all these years.

Great book and cones with bonus Animal Farm, a political satire about corruption of power and greed.

Enjoy

                                            • @rokufan: Yep, and as I've illustrated repeatedly it's still a factual document irrespective of whether gender is recorded on it.

Are you ready to stop writing yet given that you're purportedly not a fan of typing?

                                              • @Pantagonist:

factual document irrespective of whether gender is recorded on it.

That would be an incomplete factual document.

                                                • @rokufan: …in your opinion, because you refuse to provide any evidence other than your own personal opinion to back up that fact, right?

The fact you don't see the irony in pulling people up about basing their arguments on personal opinions when that's all you've got to support your own is just delicious.

                                                  • @Pantagonist: You want the change. The burden is on you to make a strong coherent argument. And you are failing.

                                                    • @rokufan: Haha, the change has already happened mate. You seem to be one of the last people who want to die on that hill when the battle's already been lost.

                                                      • @Pantagonist: Some places yes. Some places no. And governments change.

                                                        • @rokufan: Keep holding on to that dream!

At least you're safe from the wooly wooftahs up in Brissie mate. No danger of Palazszszschuck getting back in next election and you're all guaranteed coal mining jobs for life.

                                                          • @Pantagonist: Yes, I imagine you took the federal election result poorly.

                                                            • @rokufan: Not really. Unlike authoritarian cucks, I don't look to government and other authority figures to bring meaning to my pointless life and tell me what to do and think. The party in federal government has minimal impact on my life.

It's more correct to say how Orwellian are things here in the comments section, slave vs slave arguing online, just as the animals (other than the pigs) did in the book.

Or as Tim Blair calls the hierarchy of victimhood, "Grievance Poker".

How good a hand are you holding?

      • +6

I have two pair. The race card, and the LGBTQI card. There is no stronger hand possible.

        • +3

Truly a hand to be reckoned with. Congratulations!

        • +4

I believe a single transgender card will trump both of those, although the rules of the game change constantly and it's hard to tell.

        • "Grievance poker" is a confection that doesn't reflect reality for most people.

The only people who think that minority issues need to be stratified are crazies on both extremes of the political spectrum.

To me the obsession with it seems to mostly come from the anti-minority representation side of politics.

I can watch Sky News five nights a week and see Andrew Bolt & friends going on about it at least 20% of the time. The people I associate with who these commentators seem to know so much about tend to want to talk about other things in my experience.

        • I'm not much of a poker player, but I do know that holding two different cards isn't "two pair" by any definition.

        • What if you were also a Muslim indigene that identified as female? That would be a full hand.

    • Sounds like you're angry that you're not, or ever have been discriminated against.

Have read animal farm and highly recommend it. Apparently we are living 1984 already, i have yet to read it but its on my to read list.
I wish i had time and motivation to read more books! (Which is funny, because total lack of general motivation is what got me reading some books) A good one can be immensely enjoyable. Tickles that (profanity) brain in the right way. I (profanity) up by not reading for 20 years i reckon…(Of course internet addiction doesnt help…) just wasnt into many books read in school/too stupid with words/family not native english erh. But i liked a lot of sci fi that were books, so that was the impetus to get my ass to books..Tablet/ebook reader with dictionary so helpful.

  • Got the paperbacks of both books but I'll get the kindle versions to read also. Thanks OP

My grandmother made me watch the Animal Farm movie (1954 version) when I was a young kid and then sat me down afterwards to make sure I understood what it all meant.

    Very grateful for her.

1984 is bittersweet for me, mandatory reading in an English subject I did at Uni. Loved the book, failed the essay (continually wrote 1982 throughout as it was the year I was born).

As mentioned above, these books are in the public domain in Australia and you can get proper copies that aren't dodgily transcribed. Like in thedylo's link from Adelaide Uni

  • This is the one out of the many books worth reading. Thank you for posting.

  • Brave new world is way more fitting

  • Seems to have gone back up in price to $USD 12.99

Amazon US product page says 'this title is not currently available for purchase'

    • I'm seeing:

$0.00 Free with Kindle Unlimited membership
      Or $12.99 to buy

So I've opted for the Adelaide Uni version.

  • Came here for the free book. Stayed for the comments. Was not disappointed.

  • Suspect420 is going to get raided by the AFP over this..

  • (profanity)! I always miss these :(
