Digital Camera for a Toddler

Hey OZB community,

I'm looking at getting my 3-4Yo kid a digital camera. Does anyone have a recommended bargain camera?

Key requirements are
* easy to use
* has a viewfinder
* saves digital files

bonuses would be waterproof, rugged industrial design, long battery life etc

Considering the Instax SQ10, but not really sure I can trust my kid to not use all the paper in one hit on a dead ant

Any suggestions ?

    Ask around the family, no doubt someone has a p&s that's been replaced by their phone and is gathering dust

      This. We use a 10-year-old camera that was sitting in a draw somewhere. She loves it and I don't care how many times it gets dropped, finger prints, food etc. The only issue is battery life but given my 3 year-old has the attention span of a fish, it's not a huge problem.

      Precisley…
      But make sure you add some sort of protective case cause you KNOW that it'll be thrown around and jumped/trod on.

      Yep, we did this with a 12 year old shock proof camera (one of the first Panasonic models). And then realised we wasted our time finding the old charger and memory card, as when the battery died, she continued to 'take photos' and show us. So you probably don't even need a working camera.

    ive gotten the Panasonic water and shock proof one
    was at office works for 150 bucks
    its ok
    the pics aint great (bit slow in taking the photo)
    but son loves it, has dropped it on the ground and water and its fine

    prolly best to ask around first or an old camera

    Get one of those point and shoot digital camera for under $100. You can even find used cheap ones from eBay. SD cards are cheap as well these days.

  • Thanks for the replies, I think the only issue with point and shoot is the UX might be a bit too tricky if my kid gets in a menu or submenu etc.

    also would be awesome if something had a power plug or dock designed for kids.
    guessing nothing is on the market for exactly this but lots of options that will still sort of work

      Mainly because many kids are being chucked phones/tablets at this age for more than just camera work.

      Let's face it, a 3-4yo is going to grow up with technology and touch-screens, not digital cameras.

      • Yeah even if I lock down a small device to only be a camera , they'll still realise at some point it's a phone /tablet and capable of more… Then the pressure is on me. Whereas with just a camera it's clearly single purpose

      Getting a Red camera for a 3 year old is deliciously crazy.

      crazier than getting different leica in every colour to contrast with your nails :)

    Vtech make a kids camera that does everything you want. We bought one for our daughter 4 years ago and it still works fine.

    Just google vtech camera.

  • We bought a cheap one on ebay for like $30 for our toddler. Biggest issue was working out the menu to change it to English as it came in Chinese by default, but after that was really good.
