Can We Buy Chicken in Farms ?

Guys,

I got bored of woolworths, Coles or Dandenong market for buying meat ( especially Chicken). Reason being either I have lost the taste of these stores chicken OR they are reducing quality (Freshness, grass fed, pasteurized ) due to competition.

Anybody has ever tried buying chicken directly from farm ? If yes, your reviews on quality, price compared to stores ?

I heard about one farm near Lyndhurst. Any farms near Pakenham ?

Thanks heaps guys for your time on this.

    How about trying organic butchers?

    • ^^ This.

I assume that OP does not want to buy a live chicken from a farm, or from a chicken farm with thousands of chickens.
All of those chickens are processed elsewhere.

Near Pakenham is this place, but they appear to only sell at markets: http://www.hilltopfarmmeats.com.au/free-range-game/

And apparently Heritage Springs Meats also sell free-range chickens.

    • Organic is the new hip, right?

  • Yes, supermarket chickens suck. Most good butchers and some nicer stores stock Bannockburn chickens which I find to be pretty good.

The markets give you a few options for interesting birds including cornfed chicken (though I don't think it's worth anymore than a good free range organic chicken).

There are some farms out there that probably do sell direct but I find it less common than other types of meat (maybe health / safety regs?).

There are farmers markets around Melbournes where poultry sellers usually show up.

Rock up to a place with chickens (the ones for eating) and owner is around.

Give them $10 cash. Take chicken. No receipt.

    • = fresh eggs too

      • Fresh eggs, $5 a dozen for free range.

Caged are probably operated in extremely large scale so owners probably not around.

  • http://www.greenvalesgoldenyolks.com.au/ is in greenvale and does delivery and was selling chicken meat but because of nearby construction they only do delivery atm

  • I remember going to a place to get eggs directly, but it has been years since I've done that as I've moved closer to the city.

I'm sure they could sell you a chicken directly, but you'd have to skin it and all yourself. Although, maybe there might be some regulation about preparation of the chicken by an authorised butcher or something…

    • Er, I don't think you skin chickens. The word you're looking for is [pluck]

    due to competition.

I'm not sure why fools keep repeating Government talking points about competition existing when it doesn't exist in most industries in Australia because an oligopoly exists.

Its easier to find a butcher who you source chicken from good farms. Eg PeterBouchier, Cannings etc.

  • Sutton Forest Beef and Wine sells free range chicken. They advertise here fairly frequently. I think their chicken tastes pretty good.

I usually wait until they have a promotion and get the Chicken Lickin Variety Pack to save on postage. They are happy to swap items that you don't want with those that you prefer, e.g. breast fillets with thigh fillets.

    Hatch your own

  • KFC gets fresh chickens delivered daily.

  • This place is near you and pretty good.

    Cherry Tree Organics Butcher Shop
1/22-24 Old Princes Hwy, Beaconsfield VIC

  • Move to Canberra and get whole chickens from Kingsleys. They're crispy on the outside, dry on the inside (the right kind of dry, just not sopping wet like Woolies ones). And cheaper than Woolies at 8.95

  • Maybe you’re not seasoning it right?

  • Keen to find out if anyone has done this in WA ?
