AmEx Now Allows Replacement Cards with Same Card Number

Maybe I’m a bit slow on the uptake, but a few months ago the only way I was able to get a new Amex card was to have your old card cancelled and be issued with a new number (a nightmare when you have a few direct debits set up). I just had a look tonight under my account management and you can now choose to replace your card and keep the same number. So if yours is looking a little worse for wear, you can replace it painlessly.

  • That is good to know.

  • It's a pain that they want to replace the card just to do a PIN change. Can you keep the same card number & replace the PIN?

  • Hmm I had a look at my Account Management tab and there were no options that allowed me to keep the same number?

    • Account Management > Card Management > Replace a Card. Clicking it gives me 4 options: lost card, damaged card, never received card, and stolen card. I’ve got a Qantas Ultimate if that makes a difference.

      • Yep I saw those four options however the Text Description for all of them only mentioned new card numbers

        Lost Card
For your security, your Card will be cancelled and you'll receive a replacement Card with a new Card number.

        Damaged Card
You can continue using your existing Card until the replacement arrives. Your damaged Card will be reissued with a new Card number.

        Never Received Card
For your security, your previously issued Card will be cancelled and you’ll receive a replacement with a new Card number.

        Stolen Card
For your security, your stolen Card will be cancelled and you’ll receive a replacement with a new Card number.

        • Weird. When I click on each option it doesn’t give me the description. Okay, guess I’m wrong then. Sucks they haven’t introduced this feature yet.

      • +1

        Thanks - i just used your advice ^ ^!!!

  • I've had this feature for a long time. Both on my Centurion and Plat cards, and even my regular Amex credit cards. I've always just called up and asked for a new card with the same number, never an issue. All that ever changes is the ccv, the 4 numbers on the front right of the card, but the actual card number stays the same with a different CCV and expiry. The only time it would change if there's fraud, it's lost or stolen et cetera. So it's absolutely possible. And this has been the case with my accounts that have followed me from Canada, to the US and now to Oz. Perhaps it depends on your relationship with Amex, not too sure, just know I've done it several times.

  • I just checked and mine still says it will give a new number. I've been waiting almost a year so far for renewal to come in September so that I can keep the number! Use it online or Apple Pay only and got an associate card for when I need it in store
