Good News to Stop Backyard Breeders

Good news to stop backyard breeders

From 1 July 2019, people advertising kittens, cats, puppies or dogs for sale or to give away in NSW will need to include an identification number in advertisements. The identification number can be either:

  • a microchip number
  • a breeder identification number, OR
  • a rehoming organisation number.

One downside is this probably will put a strain on ppl dumping their kittens/pups at welfare centres than selling them

Huh, people doing illegal things will finally be stopped by law.

I wouldn't hold my breath that this would do anything more than create another underground industry of spoofing chip/ID numbers or create other channels of sales which bypasses detection at the expense of the animals.

I'm all against backyard breeders. I'm just acutely aware that these laws tend to have the opposite effect.

Opportunistic/criminal people will find a way to benefit from the change in supply.

Real change requires people to report the activities which are already illegal. The issue has always been enforcement and demand.

a lot of ppl do things out of opportunity they dont go all the way to bypass laws etc. e.g.. I was looking for a kitten, then decided to meet a "breeder" near mascot area. Turned out this was an asian foreign girl who had like 3-4 kittens in HER carry bag! No other documents. I think it'll stop these types of people who just want a quick buck to fund their lifestyle. Plus some people will stop doing things if they're against the law. Up until now it was completely acceptable to sell via gumtree etc without any documentation.

It will deter some of the amateur/scared suppliers but there will be the truly hardened types that will fill that void in the supply… by any means necessary.

        • true. Can't stop everyone. At least people will be aware to check microchip numbers etc now before buying.

@funnysht: Animal microchipping is like breast cancer. Most people are already aware.

After a certain point, resources spent on awareness is resources wasted.

Didn't really want to be morbid in the morning but I know about puppy farms that struggle to move product but have found a new consistent buyer… dog fight trainers.

They buy these unmovable puppies as punching bags for their champion and eventually, these dogs are lucky enough to have their torture ended by being first blood to a new fighter.

This is the typical outcome of forcing industries underground. Booze, drugs, tobacco, sex…

And you can bet that it's the truly hardened types that give no regard for animal welfare for the sake of their $$

@buckster: So true. Just look at all the KFC and cheap milk deals on this site.

From the title I thought it might be the follow-up to Struggle street.

Breeder identification numbers are free and available to cat and dog breeders online through the NSW Pet Registry.

Not really a deterrent. Pretty easy to get the ID number

  • Having been involved with breeding Labradors for many years, I have heard of some terrible stories about some breeders. To me, the problem does not seem to be an absence or lack of laws, it seems to be a lack of enforcement of laws. If adequate enforcement is not going to occur, then I don't see the point in simply making more laws that just the law-abiding breeders comply with, while the scammers just continue to do whatever they want pretty much without fear of prosecution etc. The situation does vary from State-to-State.

    • Very true. And even the ones who are successfully prosecuted are often still allowed to own at least 2 animals!!

Yeah, this ain't gonna do shit. The government hasn't got the balls to stop the real problem. Stopping backyard breeders starts with targeting the people who give them money.

We need more awareness about the dangers and effect of buying pets from dodgy breeders. We need more sympathy campaigns to show people the ugly side of that $700 cute puppy they saw on Gumtree. The fact that buying from these people only supports them in mistreating animals, and gives you a dodgy pet with countless potential problems.

And for crying out loud, hold pet stores responsible for the quality of animals they stock. Major corporations are still using puppy farms to source their animals. This country is a joke. Meanwhile they complain about too many abandoned dogs or mistreated ones attacking people. Get stuffed.
