Cheaper Brand Cooktop and Ovens (E.g. Bellini, IKEA?)

Currently at our place we're using the house-included "Euro" brand gas cooktop and electric oven. They each have their own little faults (e.g. faulty hob sparker) and now the oven is getting unusable, so time to replace them (more so the oven, but may as well get the combo pack)

After spotting IKEA having ex-display ovens in their clearance section every now and again I thought of just getting them through there for a bargain on (hopefully) a decent quality oven, but I didn't really have any complaints about our current ones aside from the faults so I'm musing on skipping the IKEA ones and going for a Bellini Bunnings combo:
https://www.bunnings.com.au/bellini-60cm-gas-cooktop-and-60c…
(it's not the cheapest-cheapest on the site, but I like the front-located gas dials for the stove)

Just wondering if anyone has bought this price range of cooktop and regretted or not. All of our friends bought new-build houses with Bosch/Smeg, etc. but I've never cooked on them.

For instance the generic dishwasher (also "Euro" brand) that came with the place was absolutely useless so we bought a branded Asko one for that. I'm hoping gas hobs and ovens are simpler devices that are harder to do badly!

  • I recommend shopping around at the usual suspects and identify what you actually want / need.
    - Size? If you get the same size as your current, that will save on benchtop changes. But, some 75cm cooktops fit a 60cm cutout (but not all).

    • Number / type of cooktop burners? Stay with gas or change to electric? Have you considered induction? Four, or five, or more, burners? Location / arrangement on the cooktop? Where do you want the controls (side, front)?

    • Oven type? Electric / gas / steam / etc.?

We picked up a Smeg cooktop from a clearance retailer at a heavily discounted price, but we already knew exactly what we wanted and it fit the bill.

    • Currently got a stock standard 60cm set with 4 burners (1 big wok type, 2 med, 1 small).
Not looking to upgrade it as such (also see a later comment)

We have a Bellini 60cm electric oven, that was installed in our house about a year before we bought it (according to the previous renters).

First thing I noticed was that half of the the grill element had failed, so only the centre of the grill works. The seal on the oven was also pretty bad, so we replaced it,which was something like $40-50. It's been 2 years now and it needs replacing again. The extraction fan also started squeaking after a year or so and needs replacing - it's really noisy now. The price of parts for the element, extraction fan, and new seal will cost more than the entire oven cost new, so we won't be repairing it - we're just using it until it dies or we renovate the kitchen.

It cooks alright and fairly even, but I wouldn't recommend it.

    • Our oven probably has a seal issue too then. Thanks for the feedback! I think I'll snog marry avoid Bellini then.

The warranty on it isn't that long either; Bunnings 2yrs, IKEA 5yrs.

Don't get a Bellini if you have any say in it at all! Our Bellini oven heats unevenly and the seal is dodgy, so it leaks. Our Bellini dishwasher just stopped working, and a quick google tells me that this is a fairly common complaint.

I did major renovation to my house, I got both IKEA Gas stove and Oven

It been 2 years, no problem

And IKEA warranty and customer service is legendary

    So why not ?

  • Thanks for the feedback guys.
Not looking for any "upgrade" per se, just hoping for the quick tradie change of gas line for the stove top and wiring for the oven (unless it's a domestic plug already?).

From some of the poorer feedback sounds like I might just get another brand then. I mean I don't know much about the IKEA quality, but from what I saw basically the ovens when ex-display in the clearance section cost about as much as a new cheapie oven from Bunnings. On that note I feel like it's safer waiting it out for a better brand than that JB one too!

    • Definitely do your research re: brands - I can vouch for Smeg!

We bought from https://www.homeclearance.com.au - free delivery & removal + can arrange installation (additional cost). You can search online for the items that are available based on your postcode.

Technika IKEA Bellini arc Artusi euro belling euromaid all of these brands are cheap for a reason.
Why pay to have something installed that your going to use every day that is poor quality?
Better off paying a few hundred more and getting smeg Bosch ilve westinghouse
The same can be said for the ikea kitchens, if your happy living with that sort of quality fine, problem is when you go to sell it people will walk in and say “is this kitchen from Ikea? Did you install it yourself? It looks cheap cause it is.

    • Generally IKEA is actually rebadged decent quality stuff, from Electrolux/aeg etc. At least with the induction cooktops.

Only get one of these if you're prepared to regard it as a throwaway. build quality is ordinary at best. As someone who repairs them, parts are either almost impossible to get, or ridiculously expensive.

If you don't want to spend money on the European stuff, look at Chef or Westinghouse as simple basics. They're the same company, well made and good supply of parts.

  • I think that IKEA used to stock Whirlpool appliances (which is at least an American company, but the appliances are unlikely to be made there, AFAIK).

We've got a New World (Belling) freestanding stove, and cooktop, with a separate griller (it was a clearance model when TGG was relocating stores). Overall it's not too bad. The oven temperature isn't accurate, but I've found the same thing with my mum's very expensive Gas-Gas fan-forced Glem anyway, but overall despite not being fan assisted I think it cooks reasonably well, though because it is conventional it does have cold spots, and we can't expect that it will cook completely evenly. The hobs work well, consistent flame, and they light readily with the piezo manual igniter. The griller does the job, pretty basic. The only other thing that I don't like about it is that it's only 60 CM, but we were obviously aware of that when we bought it.

For the price, we've been pretty happy with it (around $600 from memory).

  • Ikea appliances are by either Whirlpool or Electrolux so are not bad for the price. My tenant was complaining the old Westinghouse oven wasn't cooking evenly two years ago and I got a multi function Ikea oven at half price at Tempe store (discontinued model) that was made by Electrolux in Europe (Poland or Italy, can't remember) with a 5-year warranty, no compliant since then.

Otherwise try the Miele clearance centre, they have some display or old models at good discounts.

  • Renovated our kitchen 4 years ago and put in a DeLonghi oven and Westinghouse 900mm 5 Burner cooktop. Oven has worked very well. Cooktop not so much. The wok burner is hopeless so to get enough heat have to put the wok across two burners. What would be useful (and I don’t think one exists) is if you could move the hobs around to suit the pots you’re using.
Cooktop cost around $600. Friends in Melb have a Smeg which is excellent but it cost $2,500. Given we use the cooktop pretty much every day, should have spent more to get something better.

After recently replacing a dreadful Fisher & Paykel oven and a very cheap gas cooktop that was an absolute pain to clean I came to the understanding that you need to start at the middle of the Westinghouse/Electrolux price range and work from there.
Simply, you get what you pay for.
I don't like paying for status brands, but I don't mind paying for quality.
Smeg looks pretty, but cost more than a commercial product that you would use on a daily basis.
I found sites like review.com and Choice helpful with decision-making.

    • Exactly, why buy something that’s $300 cheaper that’s only going to piss you off everyday for 5 years until you replace it.

Bellini is the same "Euro" junk.

So all depends on the warranty.

Problem is that nearly all whitegoods are now made in China.

Even the good old reliable Chef ovens are no longer what the used to be compared to when they were made in Australia. They too are made in China.

  • Have a look at second hand but near new. I bought a freestanding stove/oven for my old house off gumtree. It came out of a recently built house where the owners had replaced it with a larger oven. It had been barely used and was super cheap.

Sold my old freestanding oven (wasnt fan forced and didnt suit the kitchen reno) for half of what the new one cost.

  • Saw a couple of Everdure's on clearance at Bunnings today, from 500-ish to $350. Says made in Turkey but found a WP forums thread that wasn't too kind to them similar to Bellini
