Book/Comic Suggestions for 9 Year Olds

Hi guys,

Looking for suggestions and OzBargain directions on illustrated books for my twin nine year olds.

The boys really enjoyed reading the Tin Tin collection, and have recently read the first Amulet book, and I was just looking for suggestions on other similar books and where to buy them from.
We tried some of the older comic books, as they are quite PG compared to the current ones, but the kids didn't seem to get into them as much.
Recently, I have also bought a couple of second hand Asterix novels, but they are quite hard to find and expensive.

Thoughts and suggestions?

Have a look at this page: https://www.waterstones.com/category/childrens-teenage/ficti…
It should be filtered to Fiction \ Ages 9 - 12.

If they have read Astrix and Tin Tin, I assume that books in a similar genre might be of interest; you could filter that site further on adventure/crime/mystery.

The site is a UK retailer; you may be able to source some of the books locally or order for delivery (also have a look at Booktopia and other similar sites).

    • Will do, thanks for that suggestion.

Dragon Ball, Doraemon, Kobo-Chan, Ninja Hattori, Saint Seiya, Yu Yu Hakusho

    • I have had a look at these, but the novels that we have here all do the Japanese style of pages where they go back to front, which confused the kids.
Having said that, last time they looked at them was over a year ago (maybe even two), and they are much more confident readers now, so may be worth a revisit.

      • Ah yes the format is quite unique. But I think, if they are really interested in the story, they will adapt to whatever way to read the comics.

9 years old me was really into these Japan comics and it really gives me great memories up until know.

Give them another go again, hope they'll enjoy it.

'Bone' comic/graphic novels would be good.

    $20ish per volume (9 volumes)

    • Haven't heard of this previously. Will have a closer look when I get home from work, but from what I have seen it looks great.

Can I recommend you use your local library? It costs nothing and they can get titles in you request from other libraries in the system. A quick search on my local library revealed four pages of Asterix titles including ones called "Asterix Omnibus".

    • That was my first point of contact. Our local library is only a walk away from our house. It had quite a few comics and animated novels, but the content was quite graphic.
The other books there were either too kiddy (grug, mr men etc) or for a much older audience.

      • As Sparkles has indicated search for books, with the library website, and request they be sent from other libraries. You may need to prebook if they are out. It might also be worth looking at a few Op shops to see what they have, you never know.

  • They're old enough to be reading young teen material, I was at that age. Deltora Quest series, Artemis Fowl, Goosebumps in a year or two. I've forgotten most of what I read back then, but manga really is a great option considering the length of some of it, could really keep them occupied and they'll adapt quickly.
