(Amazon AU) Refunded Item Arrived

So the other day I bought an item from Amazon but emailed them to cancel it just as it shipped and was issued a refund… and then it arrived today. I've also received the full refund some days ago.

I've emailed them about it, and here's an excerpt of their reply:

**As a One Time Exception, No need to return the item you are welcome to dispose it.

… What? Are they basically telling me to keep the item? Will I still be charged for it?
Any pointers will be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Edit: I've done research in similar topics, I'm moreso just worried about their wording here since they don't mention anything about the refund…

Edit 2: Contacted Amazon again to clarify, was told to rest assured that I won't be charged. Hooray?

    new member, no wonder….
dont worry you are not that special. happens to many. amazon is rich and super good in customer service. just buy more from them if you feel grateful.

I've seen lots of posts about this, it's just that their wording here worries me, lol. But yeah, amazing customer service, already have more orders underway.

Why the need to be snippy? New members are entitled to ask questions, I don't understand why people answer with a superior, smart ass attitude.

**As a One Time Exception, No need to return the item you are welcome to dispose it.

Sounds like they are telling you to dress up in a dog costume, drive to the ocean, and throw the item into the water (whilst singing Banaramas "venus" in g-sharp)

  • What's the item?

Nintendo Switch. Quite surprised they'd just let me have it.

now for 100000 million ozbargainers try to order and cancel their nintendo switch orders at the right time

        • Tried the same thing, didn't work. Ordered the 16th. Tried to cancel the 18th. Was too late in the process to automatically cancel, but agent said he'd try what he could. (Un?)fortunately he was successful, shortly after I received an email saying the payment was declined (I had used a gift card).

But at least I got a cheap Switch at EB Games (possibly the same reason OP tried to cancel their Amazon Switch order).

          • @josetann: I actually didn't intend on cancelling. A few hours after I ordered the price dropped by around $20 on Amazon itself, so I just tried contact them to see if I could price match on that (since the order already shipped). They said they can't, and offered to cancel the order and stop the courier. I didn't want to go through that hassle, but I was curious, so I asked them about the whole cancelling thing and they just mistook it as my agreement to stop the delivery and refunded me, lol.

        Oh damn

      • +2

Ohhh, don't tell that to other people. Especially on sites like ozbargain.

  • So Amazon's customer service is balls to the walls exceptional.

  • Congratulations, you've scored a free Nintendo Switch

  • They will contact you later to ask a favour of you and you would be exceedingly rude to refuse.

Yup.. Keep your firstborn locked away and do not even whisper of his/her existence to Alexa

Up to you… keep the item and the refund or pay for it.
Last year I had an item that was late in arriving from an ebay seller. I requested a refund and got it immediately then a couple of days later the item arrived so I paid for it. To me it was the right thing to do… Austpost was most likely the reason for the slow delivery, not the seller.

I had a similar situation, except that I didn’t ask for the refund, it was given to me without me asking.

Then I began receiving abusive messages via eBay from the seller.

When my item did finally arrive, 2 weeks after Christmas (it was supposed to be a Christmas present), I contacted eBay and told them that it had arrived. I was told that I could keep it and the refund.

Had the seller not been abusive, I would have paid for the item. As it was, I was torn between paying for the item and keeping the refund.

Note:I had ordered the item in mid October. It wasn’t as though I had left it to the last minute.

Sucks when that happens, as an OzBargain special I'd be happy to handle the disposal for you, free of charge.

Correct me if i'm wrong. But when you ordered on amazon and change your mind and get a refund despite the item leaving the warehouse already, it is stipulate somewhere that you are supposed to ignore the delivery and it will be returned to them. In the case you signed and accepted the item, you can be charge at a later date once they processed the delivery.

    • My packages go through a middleman, plus I was expecting another package from Amazon today, so when it came I just took it without question… explained to them too. Just tried to follow up with an email to confirm if I'll be charged, so I'll probably wait for that.

      • Don't worry about it. You got a free switch. Amazon recently handed out 200+ $30 credit for price errors. $400 is nothing to them.

      • Wish you the best of luck. Make sure you keep a copy of all the mails. Because they got different departement handling things. If you actually asked a general enquiry and didn t went throught their returns departement, you might be up for a good surprise. For honnestly, if there was a loophole in that, a lot of people would have already jump in it before you. Once, someone i khnow got a charge back from amazon on their credit card 5 months after a similar experience as you. It was basically due to the time frame of their investigations. Nonetheless to say it was a lot of back and forth emails to end up getting the item and the money. But it was amazon.us. so, good luck!

        • Thanks man. They replied confirming that they won't charge me, but I'll keep a lookout on my card statements and see if anything happens!

  • Similar thing happened to me, my pair of shoes disappeared in the post for about two months, asked what was going on and they refunded me, they arrived a few weeks later. Was allowed to keep them.

  • OP is talking about this Nintendo switch.

    I assume this is applicable:

"if you contact the business in writing, expressing that you do not want the products, then the business should recover the products within one month… If the supplier does not collect the unsolicited products within the above timeframes, you can keep the products with no obligation to pay."
