Winners for this week's competition:

There are actually three deals competiting for the most popular spot this week but eshan's Kodak camera deal won out at the end (although it is no longer available). Congratulations to all who have submitted deals this week!

After yesterday evening's drama and neil's call on the competition, I do wonder whether having a "most popular deal" prize is a good thing for the community. I still would like to run comps here but might consider 2x random prize rather than 1x most popular prize + 1x random prize.

What do you guys think?

  • Congratulations to both eshan & zack2008 for winning this weeks competition!

I think three random prizes (2 x $20 & 1 x $10) would work and/or have one $20 (or 1 x $20 & 1 x $10) random prizes and have a poll running from Tuesday evening to 11am Thursday with all of the deals from the week & each member picks their favorite deal/freebie from the week & the one with the most votes wins (if tied, the computer will pick a random winner from tied deals?)

  • I think that we do have some intelligence here - given the recent drama and how many picked up on intentions shows our bargain hunters are pretty much on the ball.

What about a mods/owners encouragement award. or even a random way of awarding a prize as distinct from a random draw.

eg we have a number of ways to win a prize.

Best newbie deal, most popular deal, best freebie, best tasmanian deal, best computer deal, best travel deal, best grocery deal, best fashion deal, best forum topic and so on. then the randomness picks three categories for that week and the best in those categories wins. So now the ability to stack/demote makes it harder as no one knows what's going to be drawn out. In true random fashion the best forum topic could come out 3 weeks running. So now we encourage participation.

Just an idea - might not work, but may lead to better ideas

BTW Congratulations also to both eshan & zack2008 for winning in face of such fierce and good competition

    • Good ideas — provided the depth of my pocket is unlimited :)

Maybe we'll do a "Mods' pick of the month" first.

      • sorry maybe I made it sound too complicated - I mean keep the number of prizes to 3 but draw the category out randomly instead of a random draw of the winners, then the highest in the randomly drawn category wins.

This means say 20 votes for a top computer deal could miss out to 10 votes for a grocery deal, if the grocery category is one of the randomly drawn categories. If there are no entries in a category you can redraw another category.

      • what if instead of giving a prize for the deal with the most positive-negative votes, scotty will give a prize for the most viewed deal (the deal with the most clicks). i suspect that the best deal will be the one that most people would want to check it out? scotty, do you have any record of how many clicks a deal takes from different ips? would you think that this would be an appropriate measure of how good the deal is? or will just indicate how good the poster is in "selling" it? :)

I come with this suggestion as a result of the current events ;) and also because i noticed that some people, although they consider the deal as very good, don't vote for it. maybe one reason for the last mentioned thing is that if you click on the deal, you are redirected to the deal and if you want to vote for it, you have to open another page for ozbargain. if the actual link will open in another page/tab, you still have the ozbargain page that you can come back to vote for the deal.

        • scotty, do you have any record of how many clicks a deal takes from different ips?

Number of clicks — yes. From different IP addresses — no.

Also some deals like coupon code for Domino's, people don't necessarily click through so it can be a bit unfair to those deals (not that you want a cheap pizza deal to win again :)

Thanks for the suggestions though. I'll definitely put them into consideration.

  • ozpete's idea sound a bit complicated… heh

Maybe just a random draw amongst the top half/quarter/10% of the deals.
Having two completely random prize, I'm afraid the site may be flooded with non-bargains.

  • thanks guyz!

  • Congratulations!
