Telstra Network Vs Optus at Melbourne CBD Train Tunnels

I am wondering if anyone notices that both Boost and Telstra lose internet (not call signal) pretty much for the entire Melbourne CBD train tunnels, while Optus actually works fine…

It annoys me a lot as I am expecting Telstra network to be always better.

  • Yeh mine is crap in the tunnels, didn't know Optus worked well

  • Yes I'm using Telstra and I start to have a bit signal until I reach Richmond or further suburbs.

  • Might depend on line..wouldn’t have thought so though.
My Optus is useless in city loop
Previous Telstra was fine, and is on my work mobile too

Optus also drops out at certain points in the journey, Telstra didn’t

I'm on the Vodafone network (Kogan Mobile) and the same thing happens. It dies around Flagstaff, intermittent around Central, dies around Parliament again.

There's also a big blackspot between Richmond and East Richmond, and again around Hawthorn station.

  • I have switched to optus for almost a month now. It works fine in the cbd tunnels for both calls and internet. Now I recalled Telstra network is actually worst then my original post, for me I normally lost internet completely as soon as I am approaching cbd on train. Also it for sure will dropp calls when I enter tunnel. But the signal bar will show almost full. Pretty useless network for cbd commuters.

  • Thanks guys for sharing your experience. I've had enough with Vodafone blackspots around CBD. Based on my past experience, it shows full signal but I have no data access at all somewhere at Docklands (sorry can't say which building, but it's heart of Docklands), and unbearably slow speed at CBD east around Parliament House. Thinking about moving to Optus or Telstra as I saw this thread. One advice to everyone: A data plan without quality signal is just a number. Don't take it seriously.

Edit: Exactly same thing with @vicerum Blackspot "between Richmond and East Richmond, and again around Hawthorn station". Very annoying!

  • I have a Telstra prepaid (not Boost or Aldi). Just requested for a refund this morning as the data speed test is virtually only up to 1MbPS on number of stations along the Glen Waverley train line. These stations include Flinders station and all stations in the city loop, Heyington, Kooyong and Tooranga. I expect Telstra as a premium provider to be much better as this is are not regional sites. I don't recall I have that much issues on Vodafone and Optus. After reading this thread, I'm going to try Optus again. Hopefully, it won't be disappointing.

    • thanks for the update. Let us know how you go with other provider.
