First Time Using Gumtree to Buy Concert Tickets via PayPal - How Do I Avoid Being Scammed?

Never used Gumtree before but was planning to get some concert tickets from there from someone, is there a legit way to determine that you won't be scammed from these? Planning to use PayPal as the choice of payment but otherwise that's the only thing I can think of that would save me from losing ~$100

Thanks in advance

Planning to use Paypal as the choice of payment

    You're joking?

The biggest Gumtree scams often involve using Paypal. Most sellers won't accept PayPal on Gumtree at all.

Gumtree is for face to face CASH only transactions.

A quick Google search will turn up hundreds of sad stories.

      @Hithere,

Mate, calm down, OP already said that this is his first time using gumtree and he might not know about this at all. That's why he's asking for some guidance from people on ozbargain.

    • Note that for certain things on Gumtree, paying via Paypal is better than cash. Things like concert tickets and gift cards ie. digital items, is one of them.

If you paid by cash: unless transaction was done and verified at the concert gates, if the ticket ends up being fake/used, you have zero way of getting your money back.

If you paid by paypal/funds back by CC: you can apply for chargeback if Paypal does not help. You may lose your paypal account, but at least you have an avenue to pursue the funds with your bank.

People always seem to forget, that the pros and cons for payments is different for sellers and buyers. For physical items, cash upon inspection is best.

There is absolutely nothing on Gumtree suitable for PayPal. This is bad advice.

Gumtree is for private sales and as such gives you no guaranteed recourse for refunds.

It should be strictly cash, and bank cheques for big purchases.

I think you've missed the point.
          Did you even read?

          • @Ughhh: Okay give me a scenario where you paid for fake tickets using Paypal on Gumtree. How do you get your money back?

            • @Ryanek: I didn't say I would buy tickets myself. But as I said earlier, for digital stuff, paypal/CC is better than cash. I explained why before.

              In addition

you have an avenue to pursue the funds with your bank.

What avenue, chance (even if a little) and who can you help you retrieve funds if you paid by cash? Have a think about it.

  • Hi there mate,

Personally, I WILL NEVER accept anything except cash/meet up face to face in public area if you're planning to sell something on gumtree. There are so many scammers on that site it's ridiculous and even if you use PayPal, they don't offer any buyer/seller protection like PayPal does with eBay.

Someone, please do correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I know there's no protection offered by PayPal if you buy/sell something on gumtree.

    Regards,

  • Thanks for the reply guys, was planning to buy something from someone. Thought that PayPal had some sort of buyers protection but I guess I was wrong and it's only for eBay?

Correct there is no PayPal buyer's protection on Gumtree.

  • Did you mean Scumtree?

Hi, im selling the concert tickets for $90. Paypal Me at [email protected]

    • sounds like a good purchase to me! paypalling you now

Concert tickets are arguably the most commonly scammed purchase.

is there a legit way to determine that you won't be scammed from these?

    no

  • which concert? make sure they're hard copy and check when you meet up

  • +4

I have bought and sold tickets on gumtree with paypal no issues.

I have also bought tickets that were fake which Paypal can't do anything about and sold tickets (hard copy) which the person said they were at the venue and it wasn't working and wanted a refund. I said I am at the concert too and will meet up with them in 10 minutes in which the tickets all of sudden worked.

So there are definitely people scamming out there. I always ask for the drivers license and ask them to add me on social media if I plan on paying online and getting them to post me the item.

Gumtree should have a market on sportsbet because it's always a gamble.

    • Thanks for the solid advice, the drivers license bit sounds like the way to go with this.

  • A friend has suggested to me to ask the person to screenshot part of the ticket including half the barcode and the concert details. Enough of the ticket to verify they actually have one but not enough to use it.

This will at least weed some people out who are trying to scam you but like others said usually only cash, face to face and the others suggestions of asking for drivers licence/social media is a good idea.

    • Assuming the ticket isnt a pdf version that can be printed 100 times and thus sold to a 100 people.
Once that cash leaves your hand, its gone. No one, no bank to help you.
