Any Such Thing as a Cover Note for Car Insurance Any More (in SA)

Hi OzBargainers,

I need answers fairly quickly if you're able.

Do car insurance companies give
"Cover Notes" any more? If yes, do they give for 3rd party fire and theft/TPP or only Comprehensive insurance?

Anyone have a discount code for a good insurance company for me please?

Meanwhile, as I await your answers, I'll read up on the Woolworths offer that I skimmed here last week

TIA :)

Noone does cover notes anymore. You can either look for something which has a cooling off period and cancel before it ends - or find a company that does short term insurance (you can find ones which do a day or a week while you sort stuff out).

    • Thanks..
When I was looking tonight, I noticed that Bingle have a 21 day cooling off period. I haven't seen anything similar on other sites tho.

A cooling off period is mandatory by law on most types of insurance.

        • I didn't know that, thanks.
Travel Insurance has been my focus for some time, so wasn't aware of other types of insurance.

Yea, when I bought my car, the NRMA said cover notes don’t exist anymore. They signed me up over the phone and said to cancel in the cooling off period if I wanted. Idk what your circumstances are, but why don’t you just sign up to the insurance you want before buying the car…

    • Thanks.
The car is ready for me earlier than I anticipated. I haven't had time to do my research on best deal yet, hence the call out for group mind

Yea easiest option is just to buy a policy online. Some of them won't even charge you straight away. Maybe pick one that you think you'll most likely go with later. Then do your research within the next 21 days and either cancel or keep the policy.

        • You're in Adelaide. Any recommendations for an insurance company?

    • That sounds like what I need to do.
      Thank you for this.

My family purchased 2 cars recently and we found insurance companies have stopped issuing cover notes. Instead, we "bought" policies from whichever companies but payments for premium were not required during the cooling off period. We drove off fully covered and then we sorted out which companies/policies we really wanted later. If we didn't pay the premium by the end of the cooling off period then the policies would expire automatically. If the cars had accidents during the cooling off period, then we would have to pay the premium before we could lodge claims.

From our perspective, there is no difference between cooling off periods and cover notes.

    • Now I understand. Thanks.

I agree… Seems like the same thing as a cover note

  • Hi folks,

So there is still such a thing as a cover note wuthering some companies.
AAMI, who doesn't have a great rating, gives cover notes!

This means I have a bit more time for researching the company that I want.

    Budget Direct is looking good.
anyone have any experience with them?
