Hong Kong - Best Way to Monitor The Situation on The Ground for Prospective Travellers

Hey friends,
Iā€™m travelling to HK in July and August. Does anyone know the most accurate way to assess how things are going? Not so much worried about violence. More interested in closing transport infrastructure and delays of more than a couple of hours.
Thanks for any resources you care to suggest so I can monitor it as the trips get closer. šŸ˜ƒ

DFAT, US Department of State, OSAC, the news, Twitter.

For transport, google maps/the website of the service you intend on using.

Threats of violence is only for those who may be considered mainland Chinese = most of Ozbargain.

Yeah with the way OzBargainers defend Hauwei, you mite be right. Lol

My Chinese in-laws, combination of Cantonese, Hokkien, and other Chinese diaspora have little like for mainlanders.

I'm going there next week so I'm trying to keep an eye on things too.
I was told 1st July is a big holiday for the return of Hong Kong from UK rule, so there is potential for that day to go pear shaped if the protests are still boiling.

Stay safe wallet72. Avoid any protests, even if it means going the long way around.
      Enjoy your trip :).

From my experience of travelling, these protests are usually in a small area and quite contained. If you stay away and don't try and observe then there isn't an issue beyond (as the OP states) disruption to local transport.

I know a couple of people who were in HK last week, at the time of the initial protests. They did not witness anything in their general tourist travels over a few days.

As in any location, just make sure you have your awareness turned up and if you feel uncomfortable get out of there.

  • reddit would be my suggestion

  • I've heard it's bonkers there…
