Who Sells Cheapest 50/20 Unlimited Plan?

Looking for the cheapest 50/20 unlimited NBN plan. Have been made aware of Belong doing a plan for $55. They mark it as their starter but speaking to their online hat the speed is actually 50/20 but they advise that you may only attain 30 Mbit in peak periods. This is more fine for me as its only $5 more than i was paying for my 12/1 plan unlimited with Tangerine.

Question is, is this the cheapest plan about? Exetel have a 54.95 plan for 50/20 for 500 gb but figure i would safe guard myself with unlimited. Am i safe to assume this is as good as it gets before i sign up?

Thanks for any input.

  • A quick look at out Whistleout doesn't show anything better than what you've mentioned

    https://www.whistleout.com.au/Broadband/Search?data=-1&speed…

    • Yeah the plan i mention isnt even listed there.

  • The Exetel offering includes VoIP free for limited use, with a $10 plan for "unlimited", to replace your landline.
Whereas Belong doesn't seem to mention this anywhere.
Dunno if this is an issue for you, most people are ditching the landlines these days.
If you're on 12/1 at the moment, you are unlikely to need an unlimited plan and the Exetel 500GB plan will probably be sufficient for you. You can upgrade (or downgrade) Exetel plans as many times as you want at no charge, whereas Belong is a little more restrictive (only a couple of changes a year).
Exetel do 50/20 unlimited for $60, so you can upgrade if necessary without too much additional cost.
I was on ADSL (similar speeds to your 12/1 plan) and I'm finding that Exetel 50/20 500GB NBN is perfectly adequate. Getting download speed around 35 (limited by the line, not throttled by the ISP), and downloading only 100-200GB per month.
Oddly, Belong don't actually state what the speed (e.g. 50/20) of their plans is, so I think their marketing strategy is to come in cheap but deliver less speed during busy periods. Underhand or smart? - depends on your point of view.
I wonder what your current monthly download is at present on the 12/1?

    • Yeah phone isnt needed as we just use mobile. I got a breakdown of usage from tangerine and its quite low(most we did was about 200 odd gb in Jan so technically Exetel would be fine but i figure the Belong plan is a better option just for the unlimited. We were fine on the 12/1 but if they offer 50/20 at other times during non peak im all good with that.

Its for a holiday house so we are only there a few weekends of the month and a full week here and there other than summer where we are there a lot more, so just need basic internet at this point. The kids do stream a bit but at the moment its all HD at most until i get a 4k tv for there.

      • holiday house

        What’s the mobile coverage like?

        • Not great. Optus is a bit so so in the area. they are installing a new tower but could be some time off as the locals are complaining abot placement.

          • @hazzad: Use a $30 Telstra starter sim each time you are there (bought for $10-15 each)

            • @Steptoe: Yeah i considered this but without knowing how strong the coverage is plus I have security cams that i monitor. Dont want the hassle of the sim running out of data or having it expire when we arent there. The hassle of having to activate, etc. Isnt really worth it for the sake of $20-25 a month. From what i can tell these sims give 27 gb each meaning id most likely go through at least 2 a month, maybe 3. Not a huge saving for me, then the hassle of worrying about when we will next go over. More annoyingly if we are watching something online.

    • Anyone considering Exetel should check their customer support wait times - currently sitting at 94 minutes. When I called up yesterday wait times were stated to be 60 minutes… I ended up waiting 1hr 50min to speak with a support person, so even that was understated!! They admitted on whirlpool that they have taken on more customers than they are able to take care ofSTAY AWAY. I left Exetel years back after poor service… this time I have no-one to blame but myself.

  • The Belong Starter for $55 is shaped to 30Mbps and also includes an $80 mobile Sim Starter, so factor that in.

As mentioned Exetel let’s you upgrade and downgrade plans in contract. I think there are excess data charges. I’d go unlimited for the $5 extra until you proved you didn’t need it.

    • 30 Mbit is fine for me. Thats 2.5 times faster than what i have. What does the $80 mobile starter sim pack include? Any reason i couldnt flog it off for a few bucks?

      • $80 credit. At least 8 months on the cheap plan. More with referral credits.

        • Is it something you can sell or is it something attached to your account?

    • Shaped is quite possibly the worst term I've ever heard used to replace throttling. It doesn't even make sense.

  • Just an update to this post. Ended up signing no up to belongs starter unlimited. Service was activated in 2 days. They had no modems in stock so still waiting for that to arrive but im just using a telstra modem in the meantime. Setup was simple. Service is actually 50/20, so assume they must just priorotise traffic down in peak given its only 30 mbit guaranteed during those times. Otherwisd happy with it so far for $55 a month.

  • Anyone else have recent experience with Belong NBN.
And hazzad - which NBN are you on, HFC?

Lots of really bad experiences on the forums about Belong from a year or earlier ago. But I think they've improved +++ in recent months, from what I'm reading.

I'm also looking at the $55 Belong plan. Looks to be the best value NBN plan available.

    • Im on FTTH. So cut over is real easy as we can have 4 services at once. Yeah my sign up was easy. And no issues thus far. Appreciating the 50/20 speed over the 12/1 i was getting with Tangerine.
