Streaming via Xbox Companion App for PC

I recently purchased an Xbox One and would like to stream games to my laptop (in my bedroom) when the main tv is being used by my housemates. We currently have a default router from tpg so the network doesn't currently handle streaming very well (unplayable lag even on lowest settings). Would the best solution be to replace the router, or would there be a more effective solution? Thanks!

Wired would always be best. At the very least a wired link from the xbox to your Router and then maybe look at a mesh 5GHz AP system or ethernet over power.

    • Would the ethernet over power option have better performance over a mesh system like Google Wifi, for example?

      • I would say depends on how the power is wired up and the layout for wifi. Maybe a sketch or distances from router to room, etc?

For latency & jitter-sensitive applications like Xbox streaming, EoP is… inconsistent. It all comes down to the connection stability (i.e. length of cabling, other EM noise on the power etc). If you're putting up with highly contested wifi, it'll be a big improvement though for a small investment. But certainly not as good as a decent Cat5 cable.

Also, before buying any hardware - EoP or router - make sure that your PC is up to the task as well by cabling directly into the router temporarily. Some older PCs will struggle with streaming anyway, so this'll ensure that everything else is working well beforehand.

      • EoP has lots of flaws. Inconsistent speeds, random disconnections requiring you to repair the adaptors. Some houses it just plain won't work depending on the internal cabling.

Better off buying a very good wifi router. The technology has practically caught up. I'd recommend the ASUS AC68 or AC88 series.

Best solution will always be running cat6 however.
