My thoughts on OLED and why I am considering it. (More of a journal post)

This is just a personal feelings based post on oled - it's not going to be an overly objective take. For starters, I'd like to preface this with the knowledge that i'm a pretty sensitive person. I tend to respond poorly to toxic or overstimulating things. I believe everyone is like this, but sometimes one person will be less aware of what they are sensitive to as if they have a protection mechanism. I don't have that protection mechanism, so i tend to notice the raw effect things have on me. And it influences me a lot.

Which brings me to LED. Ever since LED monitors came around I've been using them because i had to (CCFL monitors are not great for gaming), and I've always responded poorly. For starters there is a radioactive kind of greeny blue colour tint to everything where the muted greens and reds being projected out though what is clearly an unhealthy blue light wavelength - that always made me feel like I was wired on coffee when staring at it and this produces, in my opinion, a very unhappy kind of visual. Let me elaborate. I'm going to describe visuals emotionally now, so bare with me - It feels cold, uncaring, and lacks depth and vibrancy that makes you want to befriend the picture. A number of years ago, I got my first mobile phone (weird i know). It was a Samsung note 3, and it had a amoled screen. Having mostly been using a LED 120hz screen until that point I was blown away by the difference. Night and day is an understatement. It felt like the picture was in three dimensions rather than two. Not only that but colours became something harshly blue scale, and washed out - to warm and deep - something you enjoyed being around, like a beautiful girl that you don't even care that you can't sleep with, you're just happy having her as a ever constant artwork that happens to have a killer sense of humour. It felt like a visual revelation. It felt like a secret. Yet when I browsed forums about oled, all I saw was either owners being moderately content with their purchases or people saying how you can't use oled for pcs or gaming. Being a primarily pc focused gamer, this felt disappointing. So I asked myself the question, would I rather something with a risk factor or something outright toxic to look at (both from a health and enjoyment level) or something that simply suits my like oled. And is that price differential worth it. Not being able to afford things far less expensive, I could not justify a big 55inch oled tv. However it's always been something I desire now. The thing holding me back is technology.

While I'm willing to be extremely careful in my useage (using a monitor for pc work, and switching it to oled for games only - and not for long sessions), what I'm not happy with in last years models is a lack of VRR (variable refresh rate). And unfortunately that has not changed for this years models. Due to the LG oleds only supporting a form of VRR that works with XBOX one. Furthermore, realistically, while I might be able to afford a discounted last year model oled, i won't be able to justify 3k. 1.2-1.5k is my range. Nomatter what. So that has put me in the position where i tolerate my gsync monitor and always keep a strictly yellow flux filter running. While waiting for the opportunity to strike.

The problem is, can i go back to a NON VRR world. I tried with my gsync monitor, and even games that had perfect framerate-to-vsync locks felt juddery compared to gsync capped to the same framerate. There is something profound that gsync and thud VRR does to an image. And since I am also sensitive to judder, what I've decided to do is wait until next year for the C9 to possibly be supported by freesync/gsync via some upcoming support or method, or for the updated model to be more widly VRR supported.

That being said, there's still the consideration that the OLED picture is something that's worth putting up with vsync and just making sure all the games are well above the locked vsync threshhold.

Anyway, this is what I call a consideration piece. Feel free to add thoughts, but it's not asking a specific question. More of a statement of where I am with oled.

Wow you really over think your purchases - it must take you a long time to do groceries!

    • About 20 minutes. Usually do them online because I can save a hell of a lot that way with various coupon combinations.

heh, nice read. I know what you mean though, back when all the monitors were CRT I could tell what refresh rate they were running at just by looking at the screen. I could see them flickering where nobody else could (or didn't pay much attention). Same thing with LCD TV's, they always look 'over processed' and blocky to me (hugs plasma. At least you've found what you're looking for I guess? :)

    • Yeah it's a sensitivity thing. Some people are also just happy with anything so a led screen is just "good" or "bad", whereas if you're sensitive you tend to really focus on the details of the picture, framerate, all that kind of stuff.

Too long, will wait for the movie

Hahaha, it will be a three parter.

      • Me think you look at screens too often, maybe you should look at the real-world and help get your bearings calibrated.

        *looks at real-world *

        Ah, God Whaaaa

    Would an optometrist help?

  • Have you considered a shrink?

  • But there are ranges of LED quality right? I'm confident that my high-end ASUS LED that I use for editing my photos looks far better than the bundled dell monitors that come with our work PC's?

I guess you need to weigh up what is more important to you, your budget or your sensitivity to cheap displays?
