Licences for Split AirCon Installation (NSW)

Hi guys,

I'll start with: I did read most discussions about air con installation on the forums but still confused about which licences are exactly required to at least assume the work is done correctly.

So, I need a new Split AirCon system installed. I placed a job request on ServiceSeeking website which seems to have proper tradesman most with licences.
As expected I got heaps of quotes.

There are also two types of licences people are quoting:
1. Arc Licence (Starts with L) like L0XXXXX that can be checked https://www.lookforthetick.com.au/licence-check
2. NSW Fair Trading Licence (Ends with C) like XXXX00C that can be checked https://www.onegov.nsw.gov.au/publicregister/#/publicregiste…

Some tradies seem to have both, some only one of them.
Also, some tradies have on the NSW licence multiple licence classes:
- Air Conditioning
- Refrigeration
- Electrician
Others have less (e.g. AirCon, Refrigeration only) or more (Plumber).

I also read this https://www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au/trades-and-businesses/lic… but it does not explain which licences I should check as a consumer the trader has to do the job.

From what I understand it's better to also be an electrician, otherwise I need to call a sparky separately to have the system connected.

So, what should I be looking for?
Should I expect the tradie to have both ARC licence (for the refrigerant) and NSW Fair Trading Licence for AirCon, Refrigeration and Electrician) or is it safe to accept less?

Found a new article:
https://www.licensedtrades.com.au/licensed/air-conditioning
This states that A licence to install air conditioning also authorises the licence holder to perform any “associated electrical wiring” work that is needed to install the system. So I guess they don't need to be a fully licensed electrician to install the aircon but still need a NSW Fair Trading Licence.

Thanks,
Corneliu.

  • Need a refrigeration licence and sparky.

  • +2

A lot of companies will have a separate electrician or contract it out. Not unusual.

I'd suggest you use someone reputable in your local area. Those serviceseeking etc. websites cater to a lot of frauds, unlicensed or moonlighters who will do a sub par job.

  • I think you are over-analysing.

Try Arncliffe Babylon. They did a daikin split system for me for $1k cheaper than the nearest quote. Quality of work was not Rolls Royce if you know what to look for but was acceptable.

  • Our neighbour installed 5 split A/C diy. New fuses was installed by a sparky.

  • Refrigeration/air con license and electrical license. As mentioned some air con installs have sub contractors who wire them up.

Arctic license is generally for handling and transporting refrigerant in cylinders etc
