Band 28 (700MHz) vs 1800MHz

Hi guys,

How important is band 28 (700MHz) on a mobile?

I have been checking out phones lately and have seen a lot of comments about passing on the phone because it has no band 28.

I want to buy a A50 Samsung (grey import) from tobydealsau. But it does not include band 28 but has a few other frequencies which include 1800,2100,2300,2600.

I live in Adelaide around the western suburbs. I have checked out OzTowers and from the looks of things there are towers around my house that support 1800Mhz and 700MHz (optus).

Will the 4G service work fine on 1800Mhz?

Thanks for the help :)

It might work… but unless you're getting the phone really cheap (<$300) and getting the service cheap (<$30/month), then no.
Stick to Band28, you will probably need it in the future.

Whenever I go looking through new phones, I always check the required frequencies. After that, I check other things like Headphone Jack, microSD support, IP68 protection, root access. It's pointless buying a phone with the best camera, or best screen, or biggest battery… if the fundamentals are absent.

How often do you drive an hour or so from the city? How often do you travel interstate?

Band28 is near essential for Telstra etc. in non-metro areas.

  • The phone is $365 so its close to that figure.

Bit of a bummer that it doesn't have the 700Mhz. I use my phone basically all the time so I definitely wanted 4G service

I am unwell and rarely drive far from my house. Maybe 30minutes away to see family and go to the shops. I would say I might travel an hour away maybe once every couple of months if i am lucky.

    Who are you with?

If your with Telstra or Optus, i would recommend taht you have it.

If your with Voda, they dont have bank 28 so no big deal.

    Click on the link below…..

    https://oztowers.com.au/Home/Query

    • Untick TPG and NBN
    • Make sure Active only and providers are ticked
    • Enter your postcode and hit search

This will give you a screen with what frequencies the network runs. "4G 700MHz" is bad 28.

YOu can also click on map to see how far the base station is from your house etc…..

    Hope this helped.

    • OzTowers site is no more….

  • I'm current with Optus, so maybe I should pass on the phone?

I followed your guide and there is a station 0.11 KM away from my house that has the following:

    2G 900MHz
    3G 900MHz
    3G 2100MHz
    4G 700MHz
    4G 1800MHz
    4G 2300MHz
    4G 2600MHz

Most of the stations around me have the more or less the same list as well.

      yep, i would pass.

if your nearest tower is that close………band 28 is a given.

  • Damn, bit of a bummer :(

    Thanks for the help guys.
