[VIC] Cocoon 500GB 4 Camera Security System $99 @ ALDI Mentone

160

20+ units available as of 4.30 today

Just a basic security camera setup. Not all that great for someone looking to permanently securize their house as you're better off spending on a more quality unit, but for someone who needs to keep an eye on a small area quick or gain evidence of an impending attack, these would be very useful.

    • Nope, thats just the pro, not the pro 2

  • Personally I wouldn't recommend them as an actual security solution, but they do work as a basic deterrent. They have motion detection recording which is great for this price point, but it's hard to say what the error rate would be.

A product like this serves two purposes. Deterrent and investigation. The first is just the sight of cameras (dummy cameras do the same thing). Couple this with some CCTV signs and it actually works pretty well for your average criminal. The second is investigation. Unfortunately due to the quality of these, it's unlikely they'll be great for investigation. They are 720p, but the fact that they use a BNC connector and aren't TVI, that means the quality is probably around 0.3 MP.

They wouldn't be good for actually determining more than the colour of the person's clothes (depending on the amount of light)

TVI uses BNC connectors, and so does AHD. They're both more than capable of 720p which is about 1MP. These cameras would be one of the two.

I don't know about the investigation part of it. Unless you're some kind of vigilante with some pretty adept underground investigative abilities, I don't think you'll catch a guy whose robbed you, and the cops aren't going to put that much effort into it even with a perfect recording of an impromtu dance number in the middle of the crime.

For me cameras are good for two things, the what and the when. The what, just to confirm that something did happen, like if a parcel is stolen off your porch, and the when for what time it occurred. Its mostly for your own sanity. Too often things just disappear, and you have no idea if they were stolen or just misplaced. A camera, even a cheap one, is good for reassurance.

  • Even at $99 doesnt really sound like a deal
