Prescription glasses.

I haven't bought prescription glasses before so have no idea where the best place to go is. Can anyone recommend a good store? I have private health so looking for a decent pair of brand name glasses with little out of pocket expense. I live in SA if anyone can suggest a particular store.

Don't know which store is good but don't go to Specsavers. Their prescription lens are inaccurate and the material is not durable, easily scratched. Any savings on the frame is easily wiped out by the markup on thinner lenses and non-reflective coating.

    • Same goes for OPSM stores. Their glasses are made from horrible quality materials. Had to get my glasses repaired twice in a month due to a 'manufacturing fault'

There are heaps of spec places around. Did you get your script for glasses off an optometrist or a specialist? Optometrists are often attached to places like OPSM (but in the past I have found their service sucks). I go to my local shop to support him as his service is next to none. So many times he has done glasses repairs as my kids were growing up and never charged. A pair of name sunnies were only $20 dearer than at a duty free and when they broke a few months later there were no quibbles about just replacing them. I do buy the cheapies on line for travel but be aware if you plug in the wrong details eg pupil distance they won't feel quite "right".
If you are in a health fund you should get the bulk of the glasses back but "name" frames can be $3-500 and then add lenses $50 and up depending on the type you can easily spend up to $800+ for multifocals but much less for single vision.

  • Thanks for replies. I need to ring my health fund but they are closed till Tuesday. I think they will pay up to $600 for the lenses but then I will have to pay for the frames?? National Pharmacy members get another 25% off so I might give them a go. I was just going to get single vision but if my health fund pay out that amount I might look at transition lenses.

    • omg, $600 for a set of lenses? single vision prescription?
