Sony X95G or LG B8

Hi Guys, I’m torn between these two sets. Hoping to pickup one today for EOFY.

My room has a fair amount of natural light.

This model of X95G has local dimming.

I would also have considered an X900F however the stock has dried up.

Looking forward to your opinions! Thanks guys!!!

I personally went with the b8. Self illuminating pixels do it for me. But then again I'm willing to make sure my room has less light when I was to enjoy something. There's youtube videos of guys in bright rooms where the B8 looks great. Personally speaking, led and even qled looks wrong to me. They feel unatural somehow. Led is a very low quality light. And even when the expensive microled comes out, i think there's something just more comfortable, natural, about oled.

Put it this way, I would pay to use a oled, but someone would have to pay me to use a led.

  • Do be aware, that the b8 has a lower brightness than the c8. And the c9. But they are extremely costly, a lot more than the few hundred difference people seem to indicate. More like a few thousand.

  • The X95G from Sony has horrible blooming effects in the blacks from any bright parts of the screen, it’s really limited to very bright rooms to hide that effect so it’s going to ruin night time viewing for most, it was visible in a well lit room like TV retailer, I was also deciding between these two and went with the B8, it does very well in a lit room provided you don’t have a window reflecting in the screen, evenings they’re unbeatable and overall it’s more rich with colours and depth.

  • A 55” B8 is obtainable at 1740 or less from what I’ve seen at good guys, use gift cards at 5% off or if you have concierge warranty already for something else you’ll get 7.5% off gift cards, use a counter offer from elsewhere and you’ll maybe get more savings.
Best price in past was 1596 JB.

  • OLED all the way! You wont look back!

  • Sony delivers that "mastered" elite picture, but when it's for an inferior screen. It's wasted mastering. LG is less catered towards the "creators intent" but it's technology/pq is light years ahead when you're just looking at it.

It's like someone getting the PERFECT calibration settings on a gameboy. While you use a less perfectly but still acceptably calibrated switch. Sure, the content on the gameboy might be mastered to perfection. But the switch will look fantastic even if the green is fraction to the left instead of right. (And you have the tools on the LG to calibrate it anyway)

Put it this way, if you wanted the creators intent, and where willing to pay for it, get a high end sony oled. It's a bit better than LG oled. But since both offer high end calibration, you can essentially do what they are charging twice the money for yourself for nothing. Or get a calibrator to come if that's important.

What really stands out is the actual technology and picture quality, and oled is like another universe (at the cost of light output)

  • OLED is not bright enough for HDR spec and definitely not for a lit room, and as they are basically all the same LG panel no matter how expensive you pay it's true. I say this owning both a Sony Z9D and A9F. 100% would recommend LCD still for size and brightness at a given price point.

    • It’s still HDR if not the best effect, OLED screens make up for it in more important visual aspects and most of the important viewing is done outside of very bright or dark segments of a movie etc so with LCD it’s a sacrifice of overall picture quality for those few moments a better HDR setup would matter. OLED is king where it really matters.

      • love the OLED but sacrifice the bit of blooming for a much larger screen for less money (X90F) but still have local dimming dose better than normal screen but not as good blacks as oled. Dedicated media room without option for projector so size is where its at but depends what setup people have to deal with.

  • I've been looking at both these models for a while. It's really hard for me to tell the difference between image quality in the store. The OLED definitely has darker blacks but the Sony looks like a sharper, brighter and more vivid image. All in all they are very close. But from a feature standpoint, does anyone know the difference? Is having Android TV a superior option?

    • Over LG WebOS, Android probably wins if it runs well, then again an Apple TV box is even better.
I was keen on the X95G but the blooming is a big letdown if you want to use it in a low light scenario which is a deal breaker to me, only a matter of time till LCD ends up where plasma is. Phased out. Only so many bandaids you can put behind the old tech to make it survive.
