Lets Have a Vote to Have Expired Deals Auto-Demoted from The Front Page

The number of expired deals is getting a bit much. There are already 11 on just the front page this morning. So after a quick search through the forums i finally figured out there was an account setting to not show expired deals. Was it just me or did everyone know about this lol?
I'm not saying expired deals should be removed from the site history but can they be removed from the front page or pushed down to perhaps page 3 by default?
What does everyone think?

Instructions to permanently disable expired deals from your front page:

Just go into your account settings, hit the "Edit" tab, click on "Deals" and you'll see the option to not display expired deals on your front page. There are a bunch of other options there you can use to customise your Ozbargaining experience!

Well this is more complex than it seems, and I believe thats the reason it not auto removed from First page….

    • It seems like a fairly simple "If-Then" statement. Like:
IF "Deal Status" = "Expired "
      THEN
      ADD 40 to "Deal Rank"

      That sort of thing

I like seeing the expired deals. Gives me a sense of urgency.

the purpose to leave them is to see what is the lowest price for certain item, and from where. then, if you need that item, re visit that shop as often as you can, just in case the price back to that low level. after that, share this back to the community.

instead of 1 sentence post "where can i find cheapest price for xxx" craps

Of course! Nobody would want expired deals to completely disappear, i look up old deals to find historical lows all the time. But do we really need deals that are no longer valid being advertised on the front page?

Sometimes they're not expired, or they come back with stock

    • +1

Hmmm, that's definitely an important consideration.

Maybe they can make it so that the website reinstates the original viability of the deal once the "Expired" tag has removed?

No need, there really isn't. Either opt out, or scroll past. It's not that difficult to keep scrolling unless you're really bugged by FOMO

        • How is this the first time I'm seeing that acronym hahaha.

Of course, you're right, it is easy to just keep scrolling but i'm looking at it from a site optimisation and de-cluttering point of view. Its definitely a good thing that the setting is available though.

there was an account setting to not show expired deals

Just use this. Why the hell would mods need to remove them for everyone? What do you want, mods to remove all expired and have an acc option to show expired deals? The function's there, braj, just use it.

    • I'm definitely using it now hahaha,
I just mean that not all people know about that option and maybe it would make more sense to have that option turned on by default. The Mods don't need to touch a thing with the posts themselves.
      Plus, discussion is fun :P

OzB needs the content to boost page views - if they didn't show expired deals automatically, that's a heeeaaapp of pages not being viewed that is needed for their income to keep this site running. On that note, i hope you've whitelisted them if you use an AdBlocker!

I was thinking the same thing this morning.

    • Glad i'm not the only one lol

I was thinking the same thing this morning.

I think a lot of deals expired this morning because it's the first day of a new financial year.

      • oooo, that's what it was. Yeah its usually never as bad it was yesterday.

Keep in mind that expired deal can go in stock later in the day if more stock is added.

  • "Was it just me or did everyone know about this lol? "

News to me as well. :)

  • Title for the next discussion post: "Where did all the expired deals on the OzBargain home page go?"

We have been giving people choice with account settings for a long time. Maybe the problem is not with expired deals on the home page but the difficulty to find the settings to customise the front pages. That's something we are seeking to fix in the coming months.

    • Damned if you do and damned if you don't aye? You Mods have it hard man.

But yep, i agree, it could be easier to customize the the front page settings.
There's also the awareness problem, how many people actually know that you can customize all these settings?

Anyways, keep up the good work Scotty, we all love the site

    • The site could do with an option to remove or hide the expired deals from categories and search results. Or a sort feature that allows all expired deals to be put below current deals.

      Thanks for this resource!

      • search results.

It does. On the search results box, underneath where it says "Sort: Relevance, All Nodes, All Categories", click on "All Nodes", and click "Type: Deals (No Expired)"

        • Thank you.
It works on search results. When selecting from the category or "tags"? there are no options.

  • 100% agree with OP

Expired deals are a waste of time and just frustrate OBs who missed out.

    • Exactly. I can understand having deals on the front page that are "Temporarily out of stock", but deals that have gone past their expiry date are a complete waste of front-page real-estate. They rarely ever get reinstated or extended past the original expiry date anyway and even if they did, the "expired" tag would be removed and it would just pop back on to the front page. So there's no good reason to have them.
Do yourself a favor man, just go into the account settings, hit the Edit tab, click on Deals and you'll see the option to not display expired deals on the front page. I'm not sure why anyone would want to see expired deals in their feed lol

  • 2 active deals and 10 expired on front. What is the point t.
