Home Roof Insulation?

Hello
Wanted to check my attic and saw that theres no insulation. Was thinking of getting some and installing it myself..see pics or is it better not to in terms of heating.
My floor is covered in tiles so noy sure if it's worth it.
Also i noticed some wiring that were bit exposed.

added another link

edit: the 2nd link has the wires which aren't really covered properly. Thanks for the replies so far, i thought it wasn't going to be worth it given my floor is tiled so that's where it get's quite cool

  • Wiring looks normal

    • sorry added the 2nd link which shows it

      • 2nd pic looks ok because it is only insulator showing but if you can see the copper exposed then it is dangerous. Having said that it does look like an old extension cord rather than the normal ‘white’ wiring as in the other pic. If it is actually an extension cord it is a sign of DIY wiring and a warning that it may not be up to standard.

As for insulation I find it a double edged sword. In winter it is good for stopping heat loss through the ceiling, but in summer it will also retain heat in the house - the cool night air is drawn in less becuase the heat cannot escape out the ceiling.

Easy job to do yourself. My tip is to pay a little more and get polyester batts. Those glass ones can make you very itchy, regardless of how well you cover yourself up.

A while back I thought I would do insulation myself as I thought I could do it cheaply.

However, I found that the installers were actually cheaper to install including the batts for what I could buy at Bunnings/Masters.

It is a horrible horrible job so do not DIY.

Another tip - if you get electrical, antenna or Ac/heating technicians in your room go back afterwards to check they haven't flipped up the batts and left them there. I didn't realise had had half the ceiling exposed for nearly 2 years :(

    • Thats quite lazy of them. Hate lazy cheap tradies that skimp on quality even when you pay them a descent price. I mean theyrr as bad as real estate salesman. I mean they wouldnt do it to their own home right. So why do it to someone else's

    • Agree with this. I with with a quote to supply and install Bradford R5 for ~$1,000 to cover 90m2. That amount of insulation would have cost roughly the same to supply and DIY from https://pricewiseinsulation.com.au/product/bradford-insulati…

Turn the power off at the main while installing them.

Use a Broome or something so you don't have to crawl into the edge of the roof.

  • Have to agree with everyone else here. It's an easy job to do, but an awful one. I used the fibreglass batts and it's itchy stuff. Your walls probably aren't insulated either, so the benefits you get may not be that dramatic. I still think it's worth getting done though.
