Which Prams and car seat for Newborn up to 3 years Old?

Will be a father in Dec. Now I need to do research on Prams and Car seats.

Went to the baby expo last weekend in Brisbane, good solid prams are looking to be at around $800-1000+ mark and that doesnt include a car seat as well.

After some research I came across this one https://www.littlebabygear.com/evenflo-pivot-modular-travel-…

A few features I liked about this set up:

Pros
+ Comes with a car seat which can attach to the stroller
+ Newborn can use the car seat and pram
+ One system from 0-4 years old
+ No need a bassinet
+ Reasonable price ($400-500) online

Cons
- Cant really find any and see in person
- I heard sometimes the wheels get stuck
- Less off road than the high end stroller (Not a big deal for me)
- Not sure how "Safe" the car seat is

I want to ask if anyone have experience with the Evenflo pivot? Or can recommend another combo? It doesnt need to be the same brand for stroller and car seat.

Thanks
SS

*02/07/2019 update
After some research. I have decided to go with car seat and stroller seperate.

Car Seat:
[ ] 0-4 years old car seat
[ ] 0-10 years old car seat like the Maxi Cosi Magellan or Baby Jogger City View All-in-One but dont seem to be able to find in Australia, is it a legal thing?

Should I be looking at a all in one car seat? They are around $500-600. Or should I break it up to a 0-4 years old $200-300 then 4-8 years old another $200-300? Might work out to be similar price but at least I can get a new one after a few years of uses.

Stroller
[ ] 0-4 years old stroller ie. Maxi Cosi Laika
- needs to be 4 wheels. I think 3 wheels looks unsafe
- need to be between 5-10kg. Wife is a small person. Don't think she would like to carry a heavy pram up the car boot
- foldable size doesn't need to be very small as we got a 7 seater family van, might try to install a ramp so she can just push the pram up without folding
- seat should be able to lay flat for newborn
- wheels are smooth
- budget I guess under $500? I have no idea tbh

Any suggest brand and model for the above?

I appreciate all your help.

Thanks
SS

If I had my time again, I would get the majority of the baby stuff from Gumtree. I know I spent like $500 on the pram, as it was so big and bulky I ended up using the $20 one from Target 90% of the time … ended up selling it for $40 on Gumtree as good as new. Spent $800 on a really nice cot … $100 on gumtree. Baby stuff is not an investment, it is stuff you need to get you through to the next phase of their childhood, which will cost you even more money.

    • My wife doesnt want 2nd hand stuff for baby :/ I tried

      • +2

Not for the 1st baby anyway 🤦‍♂️

She may change her mind for subsequent babies…

        • Agree, first child is raised up … every kids after that is dragged up

      • +1

I feel you. Lucky my MIL loves buying stuff and has the same attitude. We haven't spend much but have some fancy shit

      • There is some stuff I wouldnt buy second hand like a mattress etc. But functional stuff like a cot/bed frame to me 'now' is a no brainer. Also want to throw into the mix that not all kids like prams. My first kid was fine, 2nd one refused to want to go into the pram and we had to use one of those harnesses everywhere we went. Start with the $20 Target version and progress from there.

Pram should be used from new born to 18 months, or 2 years if you extent it. It is bulky so you want to sawp to a stroller for the light weighe and space saver.

I got city select for $800 and sold it on Gumtree for $200

Ain't nobody going to convince a 4yo to sit in a pram for very long.

    • I got city select for $800 and sold it on Gumtree for $200

Agree with a city select. Can always go the smaller models if you only plan on having 1, but if there's a chance there will be a 2nd down the track then it's a good pram

      • Realised that even we have two and two years Gap, we don't think it is useful for us to get the second seats. End up getting a stroller and my little one start using the stroller since 1 years old and my 3 years old sometime use it if she is tired.

        • Depends on the kids and if you're using baby carriers or not. What did you do when baby was under 1yo? That's where I'd suggest the bassinet, and the 2yo in a seat

          • @spackbace: Yes we used the pram up until 1yo, so it has been used for 3 years. 2 years on elder and 1 year on younger

  • +1

We went through like 4-5 prams

    • can you suggest a good one?

      • It really depends on your specific requirements as there's so many prams of different shapes and sizes.

  • +2

You might find a product that will last until the child is 4/5, but good luck keeping a child in it at that age. Once they start walking prams go out the window.

I'm not a big fan of the whole car seat to pram thing - just pick the kid up (plus it's good for them to move).
We've used a Valco Baby Snap on the first - which was fine, and similar to the one your linked. On the second kid we got a second hand Uppa Baby Vista and yeah, you notice the quality difference. The second hand market is amazing for prams, you save a bucket load (we got a full Uppa set up for $600) and the expensive devices, with positive online reviews, should resell in a year or two or three for about half that no problem.
Also, some car seats for rear facing are really big. Double check they fit your car.

    Congratulations !

  • We have a joolz hub which I think is great but haven't really compared. Has a bassinet attachment which she sleeps in (prefers it to her bassinet in our room - whatever works for now). It's not super bulky and fits in our hatch pretty well, but it feels really sturdy. As the other poster said I wouldn't bother with a car seat adaptable one - just pick them up. If they stir just hold them for a bit and they'll settle unless they need boob at which point you can feed and settle. The car seat is bulky and hard to get out of the car compared to a little baby.

  • We bought a second hand Phil & Ted's Sport for $200 and it was great for our kids.

Went through a number of different pram brands with my 3 kids, the best ones were Baby Jogger city mini GT and if your having 2 or more…Baby Jogger city mini GT Double, the double can still get through normal doors and the wheels and steering on the GT models are heaps better than other brands IMO. Get a second hand one in good condition and you'll save heaps.

we tried the capsule seat/pram setup and found it crap, not worth it, baby just wakes up anyway..well in my case..grrrr!!… just carry them to and from seat/pram.

Just get a separate car seat, you can pick up 0-4 yrs seats for 150-250… dont buy second hand seats, you never know if it's really been in an accident or not.

For new born carrying, we used a hug-a-bub wrap (you basically wrap the baby too you, a little tricky at first but baby feels secure, and leaves both your hands free!!!!), and for when they are a little bigger, an ErgoBaby or Manduca. These style are better for Baby's spine/crotch as they sit into it rather than hang by the crotch (like Baby Bjorn carriers).

    Congrats and good luck!

  • I got the bugaboo cameleon, great pram, pricey, but solid
it has new born bassenet and the normal seat. can carry kids up to around 17kg and also can buy boards for the kids to seat.
it's quite big and heavy, breaks into two parts so check if ur car fits!

I also got a pockit pram, smallest foldable pram that can be hand carried, great pram, used on holidays, can bring it on the plane, not solid but good enough

recently pick up the mountain buggy nano, another foldable pram that can be taken on the plane, much more solid than the cockpit, slightly bigger, some domestic planes wont allow it. has recliner

go test out a few, check how it breaks apart and fit in ur car boot, if u have a sub u will be fine, a sedan might take alot of room.

wife wasnt a fan of used so all new aswell, had two kids and also gave away some afterwards.

After recently having a child and effectively no limitation on budget. I learnt that the higher end of prams are a marketing gimmick and the ones with attacheable and detachable car seats even more so. The things you want out of a pram are as follows and there is only 2 prams that provide this.

    1. Easy one handed fold in and out
    2. Light to carry
    3. Rear facing for a new born
    4. Front facing once 6 months old
    5. Seat that can fold flat into bed
    6. Bag storage capacity

After hours of research the Maxi Cosi Laika was the only one that fit the bill. Except the only downside was item 6. We could do with more bag storage but this wasnt that bad as our baby bag is a backpack.

I would invest in a car seat that in its own right is good quality and not a part of a package.

    • Thanks I think that pram is looking very good for us! We will check it out at a store locally

    • Is maxi Cosi a good and safe brand?

      • +1

Yes We have had no issues 1.5 years down the track. We didnt plan it as we purchased everything individually but we ended up with their car seat as well because it was one of the better ones at Baby bunting. The lady at BB said it was either Britex or Maxi Cosi. We liked the look and feel of the Maxi Cosi.

Pram really depends on where you live and what you will use it for. Don’t get sucked into the marketing, think about what type of pram you need and if it will fit in your car.

First 12 months lived in smaller towns, Strider was a great pram (also in case we decided to have another it has the second seat option), still great for long walks, but don’t really use it now my toddler is 2+. Then we travelled and moved to a capital city, Mountain Buggy Nano has been great - also folds up for carry on baggage when flying.

  • For our first(and only so far) child, we had a Maclaren 4 season. I think it was about $500 - $600 and used it for about 5 years. It survived to live in three cities, travelling around the 4 continents and dozens of flights. We opted not to have a car at that time as we are moving around (due to work) so it was a veteran of public transport. It was lightweight, slim, and our child was very comfortable(most important). It also has extra linings(one for each season).

We kept in storage for two years in case we will have another child. We could have sold it on gumtree or FB marketplace for $100-150 but we gave it away for free. I cannot stand seeing kids sitting uncomfortably on bad prams.

  • Went to the pregnancy baby child expo to buy a pram On the weekend too(shortlist was baby jogger city select lux and reds baby jive based on the sheer number of good online reviews)
After checking them out we were very impressed with the quality of baby joggers but they felt extremely heavy.

On the other hand the quality of redsbaby was just appaling and horrendous at their price point.
Couldn't believe the herd mentality of people buying that heap just because of the countless good reviews on productreviews(upon returning home I checked again and realised all their 5 star reviewers have only ever written one review and seemed quite fake. All their bad reviewers had written many others reviews and seemed more reliable and honest). If it looks too good to be true it most likely is.

In the end we were blown away by the quality and features of the Jools hub with lifetime warranty at $800 and surprisingly icandy lime (which wasn't even on our list to begin with) and went with icandy in the end.
Bugaboo was all gimmicky, impractical and bulky. Strider delux was great but a little heavy again.

Stroller might be a good option for you and maxi cozi leika seemed great but not sure if it would handle a 3/4yr old toddler. The best stroller we liked was the silver Cross jet.

    • which model of icandy did you end up getting? the silver Cross jet does look quite good too. thanks

      • Wanted the strawberry 2 but its not available anymore so Icandy Lime with inbuilt buggy board was the go. Solid as and so easy to manoeuver!
Prior to viewing we had written off ICandy thinking they'd be gimmicky but were quite pleasantly surprised with the quality and functionality. They had the ICandy Peach 2 discounted heavily to $899 with bassinet and seat included. Cheers!

It's been a few years since we have had to use a stroller but the Baby Jogger series really stood out as the best option for us. We had two with the second being the city select, I think. It was the one that you can add a second seat to a bit lower down. Highly recommended.

Best tip I can give you is don't over think it and keep it simple. You won't use half the stuff you are encouraged to buy and you definitely don't need it all on day 1. Get the new arrival home in a suitable car seat (choose one that can get you from newborn to early years) and then see what additional gear you need after they are settled in).

I have been a nanny for quite a few years and have road tested lots of prams. I also now have my almost three year old and found my perfect pram.

My pet hate was not having any room in the pram to store bags and bits and pieces and shopping when we were out so I made sure I found a pram that had a big under basket. My second pet hate was having a pram that I had to look at youtube videos to figure out how to bloody pull apart or at least compact to get in the car.

So I found uppababy vista pram and I absolutely loved it, it came with bassinet and child seat. Lots of basket room and super simple to pull apart. its a little bigger than most prams but I loved it and even took it with us on a month long trip in Europe, it was a god send having all the space underneath. Its the only bassinet that you can legally leave the baby sleeping in overnight which was great too, you just unhook from the pram and pop them somewhere to sleep, no fuss! It is on the expensive side but I found it was well worth and I was still able to sell it for around 75% of original price.

For the car seat I actually hired a capsule from a baby hire place and it was near new, I knew she would only be in it for about 6 months before we needed a car seat anyway so why waste money on buying two different seats. Then we spent money on the britex millennia which seats them until age 7, its a great seat and really breathable too as some seats get way to hot for the little ones and they end up sweating a lot. its reward facing which I kept her in until just before two and then switched it around to forward facing. great seat.

The pram had connecters so you could use the capsule with it which was handy, most prams have these connecters.

Thats what we went with, hope it helps. Congrats and good luck with your choices. :)

p.s - we now have a super super easy city jogger that folds up with the pull of one handle, she barely uses the pram and is 2.5 so we went for something that was small and compact for the times when we were on long walks etc. Also a great pram but not really for newborns.

  • Wow, sounds good, I also need one.

  • I have decided to get a japanese brand pram - Aprica Luxuna Comfort. It is light weight (5.3kg), seat faces both side, the seat looks very comfy.

Car seat will be a Britax Millenia SICT.

    Thanks for all the help
