Dodgy eBay auction - unbelievable outcome

Was browsing Rolex watches on eBay and came across this one: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Rolex-Submariner-Date-Hulk/35270…
The seller has zero feedbacks, opts for a 3 day auction, poor quality photos, and ambiguous description. Despite saying "feel free to ask questions" he did not answer either of the legitimate questions I sent him. And yet a bunch of bidders were prepared to pay up to $18,100! Seriously who buys a Rolex for $18,100 from an anonymous seller with zero feedbacks? Am I being overly suspicious?

What's your concern? That someone else has bought something that you may or may not have bought?

    • +1

I had no intention of buying it. Just shocked that people are prepared to pay so much when there are so many red flags.

      • What red flag if the transaction is done in person?

Someone was wise enough to cancel a bid of $18200 that they made on 30th June 2019 at 21:42:09 AEST, on the 1st July 2019 at 5:41:20 AEST just over 3hrs before bidding ended at 8:55:35 AEST..Or were they really the seller using another account?

This is unbelievable! You'll never guess what the seller does next! OzBargainers hate him for this one simple trick!

    good way to launder money…

    • +2

Bingo. The watch doesn't exist, yet the money changes hands.

      • +2

Paypal is a pretty weak way to launder money though.

        • +2

Only someone with experience laundering money would know this!

          CRIMINAL!!

        • Not really, you have a legitimate paper trail and you only lose a fraction in fees! Much less than what some other dodgy people would charge in fees to launder your money!

i would bid up to $1,000,000,000,000,000 if the seller had 0 feedback and 1 photo. Because A) I don't need to pay for it immediately B) i can ask questions after i win and if i don't like it i don't pay.

It's not like once you win the auction money gets sucked up. Who cares if you get a ding across your name for not paying for an item, boohoo, better than losing $18,000 to a fake.

    It's win then ask questions.

    Simple as that.

    • well technically in Australia winning an auction is a binding contract and if the seller took you to court you would be obliged to pay…

      • -3

take me to court. It's nice to know you learn all your Australian laws from chinese whispers. Next thing you're gonna tell me that eating with soup with a fork is illegal.

        • +1

Do your research. It's fact. And with the second part, I'd tell you you're stupid, not illegal.

        • Looks like it is legally binding.

    • Except you'll get an unpaid item strike and if you do it a couple of times your account will be banned.

      • -2

i've done it. sellers done it to me, i've won and they sold it to someone else.

        There is no contract.
There is no banned if X happens unless your account is just used for that.

I spoke to ebay support about doing something to the seller that sold it to someone else even though i won, they said just leave him bad feedback…….

You get an unpaid item strike, nothing happens, maybe you can't buy from a few sellers oh well.

        • Maybe you haven't had an account for years and years like most people with 100+ feedback, who would actually care if it was banned, and they had to start again with no feedback (meaning not being able to buy much and not being able to sell) or not be able to create a new account at all.

Just reversed searched the images on the listing and it appears it is stolen from here

    • how? They are different colour watches haha

      • Click the image within the window "The listing you're looking for has ended." on top on the eBay listing

        • That option doesn't show on my phone. All I see is the green hulk watch

    • That's definitely the same one. He's even used the same description.

  • The seller has zero feedbacks, opts for a 3 day auction,

Perhaps this is a first time seller taking advantage of the $3 FVF.

  • you should tag 1000060
